About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for groups
  • Charming
Just around the corner from Bath's Royal Crescent, The Marlborough Tavern combines the atmosphere of a local pub with the food quality you’d expect of a top restaurant. Two AA rosettes, and inclusions in The Michelin Guide and Good Food Guide bear testimony to the quality of both food and service. It’s no wonder it's won the Bath Gastropub of the Year title more than any competitors.

Food is essentially, though not slavishly, English in character and takes advantage of locally sourced produce wherever possible. Its food reputation is matched by their service - always friendly and attentive without being intrusive, and there's an extensive wine list and selection of local ales to choose from. The Marlborough's pub garden is arguably Bath’s finest; a walled courtyard space, that’s perfect for summertime lunching and drinking.

Arrived early and had some drinks outside but staff proactively came out when a table was free. Professional and knowledgeable waiting staff. Fantastically tasty food and great wine selection. Also happy to accommodate our little dog which is always great.

Nice atmosphere overall, but a loud baby across the room and a barking dog next to us didn’t help. Staff were friendly and mains came quickly, but the Sunday roast was a letdown - tough beef, oily veg and Yorkshire, and bland gravy. Dessert took 25 minutes to arrive as the kitchen got overwhelmed. The manager apologised and removed it from the bill, but other tables were having the same issues. Seems like they can’t handle busy services properly.

The staff were lovely and our roast dinners looked great but the cooking was very poor. The vegetables were barely cooked (very hard carrots and broccoli) and unseasoned , and the roast pots and Yorkshires strange . Perhaps they were from a packet or precooked and warmed up? Not a great experience. And the pub was cold. We went for my mother's 90th birthday and it was very disappointing.

The location is lovely, and the garden creates a really nice atmosphere, especially on a sunny day — definitely a strong point. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the setting. We ordered two beef roast lunches, and overall, it was underwhelming for the price. The beef was quite chewy, the vegetables were plainly boiled with little flavour, and the roast potatoes didn’t taste fresh - more like they had been reheated. The sticky toffee pudding was the highlight and we really enjoyed it, but even that couldn’t make up for an otherwise average meal. I’ve had far better quality Sunday lunches at a lower price point elsewhere. Nice spot, but not somewhere I’d return for the food.

Had a pleasant enough meal outside in the garden. Standard pub grub with a couple of ales and a cider on tap. Giving this review because the server was excellent, didn’t catch his name but thank you

Nice decor. Friendly staff and food came out quickly. Burger was delicious but very overpriced for what it was.
