Welcome to The Cochin Restaurant

At Cochin, our philosophy is simple. Our aim is to convey our passion for South-North coastal Indian cuisine in a way which gives you a perspective on our quest for perfect ingredients, technique, and a deep-seated desire to continue learning and evolving through old traditions and modern tastes.

There is a real thirst for home-style South-North coastal Indian cuisine outside of India; we know this because we have seen it and felt it. Our ethos demands that we not only satisfy this need, but that we work to ensure that this is done without compromising on the foundation of this cuisine.

A small place with a very understated decor and simple furnishings. No need for gimmicks or flash interiors as the food speaks for itself. There are many restaurants in the same street which look lovely but They are all empty as everyone is at The Cochin! Beautiful food with great flavours. A very different experience from your average Indian restaurant. Delicate flavours well presented with options for all including plenty of fish or vegetable dishes. We were introduced to the one in Hemel and have since introduced others to the Bedford restaurant and I am sure they will introduce their friends too ! A great place to share good food with good company 😀

The food is gorgeous, not at all the usual Madras/Korma offering. The tasting menu is a great introduction to all of the flavours, and the fish dishes particularly stood out, as did the chicken with coconut. The experience could be improved if the decor was as upmarket as the food!

Myself and my partner, on recommendation, decided to try the Cochin restaurant for a meal on Saturday night....and were blown away! The staff and the service was amazing but the food was totally out of this world. My partner had the whole sea bass and I had the traditional Cochin prawn curry. We will most definitely be going back!

Delicious, beautifully cooked, full of flavour and not greasy. The fish curry is to die for as is the fish soup starter. Also recommend the Lamb and spinach curry and the aubergine curry and chilli paneer as sides. The popadom dish is really different too. Took my Indian friend there who thought it was superb. And very reasonably priced too. I always come away feeling I have had a feast and end up with a bill that doesn't redlect the quality.

We were staying at Centreparcs Woburn Forest and decided to go into Bedford for a meal without the kids. We chose The Cochin on the strength of the TripAdvisor reviews and wow we were so glad we did!!! We had the meat thali (which included a large bowl of seafood soup to start and a desert) plus a masala dosai. My family is Sri Lankan so I am familiar with South Indian flavours and I have to say we were both extremely impressed with everything that was served. The curries were very flavoursome and authentic and everything was fresh and well cooked. The portions were enormous. To cap it off, it was really very good value. We would have been happy to pay double for the same meal. Service was friendly and helpful too. The manager told us that there are a lot of Indian restaurants in Bedford that have been established for many years and their regular clientele seem hesitant to try something new at The Cochin. I for one hope that people do try it because (a) they will love it and (b) I want it to thrive so that it's still around when we're next in the area as we will be making a beeline...

We had a wonderful time at The Cochin and would recommend it to anyone. South Indian food is very different from your usual Indian restaurant and there are lots of delicious options for vegetarians as well as meat and fish fans. The staff were very helpful and made great recommendations, as well as telling us a bit about each different dish. Lovely experience, will be back to try some more!

Easy to understand menu, with a variety of starters and main courses. Spices enhance the taste of the food instead of swamping it. Staff are friendly and welcoming. They are willing to go that extra mile to make your dining experience wonderful.

The food tastes good and there is plenty of choice, however, my husband found several bones in his starter which could have proved a choking hazard. The service was mixed. The waiter was friendly and polite throughout but the waitress gave the impression she didn't want to be there. She took our order and promptly came back to check she'd got the starter right. When the drinks arrived she'd brought me red instead of rose so l had to send it back. Before the main meal she bought fresh cutlery. She plonked mine down directly onto the bare table and slid my husbands across to him, it was like being in a cafe instead of a restaurant. When the main meal arrived there was only one portion of rice and not even one we had ordered, however, when we pointed this out the lovely waiter apologised and remedied the situation. I think if we'd been served by this charming man then our dining experience would have been much better. The house wine incidently was not pleasant, my husband finished off what l didnt drink and there seemed to be a chrystal type substance in the bottom of the glass. Sadly we wont be dining there again but would definately order a takeaway as the food was lovely.

Unfortunately we had a wasted journey to The Cochin. After booking a table we arrived to find the restaurant closed for renovation work. Call the restaurant directly to avoid disappointment.
