About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
  • Charming
ST. JOHN Bread & Wine reflects the rhythms of its locale whilst observing the same respect for seasonal, indigenous ingredients and "the whole beast" as the bigger sister restaurant. Currently opening for dinner, Tuesday to Saturday, this branch very much beats its own drum with a menu structured towards a slightly less formal manner of dining, with guests actively encouraged to share dishes as they're ready from the kitchen.

As well as selling goods to take home from our bakery, wines by the bottle or the case can be bought from our lists to take home with some delivery available.

Bread & Wine has been voted Best British Restaurant by the Evening Standard and named as best value restaurant by The Observer Food Monthly.

First time dining here, but it won’t be the last! Thoroughly enjoyed both the food and the attentive, but discreet service from the immaculately dressed waiting staff. Love the concept and love the daily changing menu.

A last minute booking but as ever a wonderful choice. Great food, wine and amazing front of house as always. It’s really great to go somewhere where “everybody knows your (or actually your dog’s) name” and the ambient sound is that of people enjoying themselves and each others’ company. Tough to pull that off in cynical London. Thank you for such a warm welcome to Gus (and us). One of my desert island restaurants. Please keep the cold pork on anchovy toast on the menu xx

Despite clearly ordering individual starters and mains, all the dishes arrived at different times and meant people in our party were left waiting while others ate. The portions for mains were small, particularly fish dishes and a smoked mackerel starter turned out to be pate. When my main course finally arrived we were asked if everything was ok. I complained the chard in my dish was inedible because it was over salted and was told it was a matter of taste. Over priced and lacking in quality and care for customers, this restaurant is living off a previous reputation. I will not be going back.

The food was outstanding as usual. However what really made the meal special was that I had mentioned when booking that my mother-in-law has terminal cancer and is going through her bucket list (to come here) and that she likes kidneys (we’ve had them here without her) - it wasn’t on today’s menu, but they made it specially for her and it was the star of the show! Thank you again so much, it really made our meal and her day, I really appreciate it.

I love this place. Tasty interesting food. The small plates mean you can effectively sample a variety of dishes at what, in reality, is a reasonable price. Be open-minded about your food and you will enjoy it. I would also add that my partner who does not eat meat, has had no problem eating here. The desserts are also very good as is the wine list.
