République, located in Miracle Mile, is owned by Chefs Walter and Margarita Manzke. Centered in the heart of Los Angeles, the historic building in which it resides was originally erected in 1929 by Charlie Chaplin, and later transformed into the iconic La Brea Bakery and Campanile Restaurant. République builds on this storied past, offering a gastronomic environment imbued with history and grandeur. The space features a casual bakery, café, and bar in the front with a more formal dining area located in the rear, serving a French-inspired menu created daily by our chefs.

From the OpenTable editors: The award-winning pastries and French brasserie fare created by chefs Walter and Margarita Manzke are still the talk of the town at this Mid-City restaurant more than a decade after its opening. Plus, the showstopping interiors are an extra incentive: Charlie Chaplin and architect Roy Seldon Price built the space in 1928, and you can still see the original brick, tile, and ironwork along with dramatic archways and green-and-white tiled floors.

Lovely night. Service was fabulous. Food was terrific. Lots of complex tastes and prep. They never make things "normally." Special. If you want a quiet experience, make sure to ask for the back dining room. Upstairs would probably be quiet too. Louder and livelier in the front room.

Our dinner was imaginative and delicious, each dish perfectly prepared and inventively flavored. The space is amazing - how can you go wrong with a building built by Charlie Chaplin? - but for the price, the service and portions are a bit below the mark. While the bussers were attentive and friendly, our server was a bit too casual and the service felt a bit too messy for the price we were paying. Buckle up for $15 butter with a good but not exceptional baguette, $35 cocktails, $40 glasses of wine, and a meal that's at least $50 per person with the most basic selections from the menu. This is all before adding on the health insurance surcharge for the staff (which they absolutely deserve, though I doubt the cost of it is proportional to the size of my meal). If you've got that money to spend and don't mind parting with it, you'll love every bite - it's really great food. If you're on a tighter budget you might feel differently. Despite the considerable creative energy evident in the kitchen, Republique hasn't quite knocked former tenant Campanile off it's perch as one of the best restaurants ever to grace Los Angeles.

I’ve been here before and really loved it all three times; but this time it was sort of unpleasant. The food was honestly just ok. The best part of our meal was the bread, butter and pan drippings. The tomato salad was literally tomatoes, hummus and dates - nothing special. The angolotti was good but again sort of basic. Then the short rib which had the potential to be good, was on a bed of white beans that absorbed any possible sauce to use on the meat. I had to use the pan drippings to eat it because it was dry. I was also confused about the wine because I ordered an $18 glass of wine but when the bill came they had charged me $72 for two glasses. During the entire meal, the wait staff was accosting us every 20 min to replace flatware and silver ware and clear our plates between courses. It was hard to talk because we kept getting interrupted. it was the least relaxing meal I’ve ever had. The actual server was lovely but for $400 on a meal for two, I want to have my mind blown and I was so disappointed. Our meal with tip was literally just over four hundred dollars and I can’t consider coming back.

Celebrated an unforgettable anniversary dinner at Republique. We were seated upstairs with a great view overlooking the large dining room below. The Uni Eggs on toast hors d’oeuvre was good as recommended. The Rodolphe le meunier butter with baguette was very good, better than expected, got a 2nd baguette to enjoy more of the butter. The Campanelle Maine lobster was very good, I can still taste the sweet lobster with the slightly spicy and tart sauce, yum. The Liberty Duck was awesome, the large juicy breasts and the crispy legs were more than satisfying, not gamey at all. Tried the seasonal apple tart and we were glad we did, the fluffy pastry surrounding the decadent apple with caramel and vanilla melts in your mouth, may we have another? We recommend République!

We were stunned by the poor quality of food at what is typically a fantastic restaurant. The prices were exorbitant as well. We were very disappointed to discover that Republique is not what it used to be. The staff and service was all excellent.

Noise level got really loud by the bar as people waited to be seated. But all else was extraordinary!
