ZEST is the second venture for the owners of Grille 3501, an upscale casual restaurant which has sustained continued growth and success for over 20 years. Located on the 6th floor of the Gateway Building on the South Side of Bethlehem, ZEST has had the honor of being awarded the Lehigh Valley's favorite rooftop of 2021, favorite atmosphere of 2020, and favorite new restaurant of 2019. Chef Justin Cogan brings New American cuisine to life with signature dishes including braised beef short ribs and crab & mango spring rolls. The views whether you choose to sit indoors or outdoors are unparalleled. The 130 seat balcony lets you take in the sights of the southside like the steel stacks, Fahy and Hill to Hill bridges, and Bethlehem city hall in the distance. ZEST also features a partially open kitchen design, large 20 seat bar, and an indoor space with panoramic accordion sliding windows that let you experience the best of both worlds.

We expected more, but it wasn’t bad by any means, it just didn’t wow us. The filet was perfectly cooked and the desserts and coffee were excellent. We liked the Crab Arancini and lavender haze cocktail. Everything else was just okay. The Duck Bolognese felt like it was taken just a bit too far (bitter) and the broth for the lamb dumplings had the same issue. If you’re paying $85/3 courses you’d expect the pasta to be fresh. The potatoes were advertised as truffle potatoes and did not have any discernible truffle flavor and some were even undercooked. We are used to chef restaurants and farm to table menus, this just felt extremely underwhelming. We may dare to try it again on a regular night.

Tried for the first time. Nice approach getting to the restaurant itself; parking garage, elevator, walkway, elevator, and a pleasant entrance. Service was very good, though a bit slow for the salad service. With my order, I got a small salad. Wish they'd serve it in a large bowl. The smaller bowl made it cumbersome to get out, though I understand that the smaller bowl makes the serving seem bigger. Presentation. I ordered the rib-eye and my wife the salmon. Salmon was very good; she though the compliment was a bit odd; not our type of food, which I'll cover later. My rib-eye, ordered medium was bright red (?) in the middle, though no juice. A wee dry, but tasty, and a good portion. Garlic mashed was a bit too much garlic and was still "tasting" several hours later, Broccolini was fine. Overall, the dish should have been served warmer, as it wasn't cold, but could have used several more degrees; barely warm to the touch. Noise level started out pleasant but as the restaurant filled, it became a bit loud. And again, not our choice for a pleasant night out. We're up in our years and this place seems perfect for young professionals. Overall, it was fine, but not our cup of tea from a menu choice perspective. Very limited to our taste buds. I can see how the view is a selling point, but living in the area for 30 years, it was meh and I didn't request it. In conclusion, check out the menu before you go to see if it suits you. Enjoy if it's to your liking.

First time dining at Zest. I do wish that the hostess had asked it wanted a high table or a regular table, as we would have chosen a regular one. Thankfully we were able to get a regular table, as I am not comfortable with table where I have to step up to sit. The view from the table was very nice, and I am sure in daytime it would be spectacular. Service was excellent! Emily did a great job with everything. The food runners were also fantastic as well. My biggest complaint is that my porterhouse steak was served cold and so were the potatoes. The only hot thing on the plate were the parsnips. Parsnips were amazing! I could have eaten an entire plate of them, that is how good they were. Now, I understand that meat should rest for a bit, but it should not be served cold. I was quite disappointed. It tasted great, just was too cold to truly enjoy it. I took half of it home and will reheat it, which isn't ideal, but at least it will be hot. The mashed potatoes tasted great, but again they were also cold. Being served cold food is something that should not happen, and honestly there is no excuse for it. I did not want Emily to feel horrible and worry about her tip, as I would never take out the kitchen's errors on a server, that is just wrong. I do wish there was a manager on duty floating about checking on people as well, as I would have said something to a manager, but that did not happen. Having worked in the industry I understand how challenging it can be to get things perfect, but serving cold food that should be hot, I just cannot excuse. I will eventually try Zest again, as I do like to give a second chance. I will let you know how that goes when it happens. Again, Service was amazing, Emily was amazing! and the food runners were fantastic. Cold food, not so great.
