Young Joni is James Beard award-winning chef Ann Kim's restaurant located in the Arts District of Northeast Minneapolis. The menu is inspired by wood fire cooking and features an array of globally influenced dishes and signature pizzas. Dining Room reservations are offered for dinner and weekend brunch; walk-ins are available at our bar and community table.

Young Joni is the recipient of 2019's James Beard Award for "Best Chef Midwest"; it has been featured in the New York Times and Vogue, and on Netflix's "Chef's Table: Pizza."

Tucked discreetly behind Young Joni is the back bar, serving full and no-proof craft cocktails and pizzas in a warm, analog setting. Esquire named it one of 2019's Best Bars in America and Eater called it an "Essential Minneapolis Bar." Walk down the alley alongside Young Joni and look for the red light; when the light is on, the back bar is open. Back bar reservations are available, and walk-ins are always welcome.

To start, I didn't appreciate the threat of a $25 fee if we didn't show up for our reservations on time. But I get this is a popular place and they're trying to make sure people appear when expected. Busy, loud and the lighting was dark, especially for 5 pm. The 2 appetizers were had (mushrooms and chicken wings) were very tasty but overpriced ($19). The pizza was okay (sausage and pepperoni), nothing spectacular, but again overpriced ($25). We ordered a couple gin and tonics, which had an overpowering floral taste. At $13 each, I do not recommend them. But at least they were cheaper than the $16-20 specialty drinks offered. A couple appetizers, a pizza and drinks put us into the $120 range for 2 person dinner. Sheesh. The wait staff are very attentive. Almost overly so. Each time we finished an app, they were swooping in to clear plates, even as we chewed on final bites. We were seated right next to the server station. Maybe that was a factor. But I suspect it was more about table turnover. In sum, it is a trendy, busy, over-hyped and expensive pizza place. I get that some people are into that.

Our family have been regulars since the beginning of Young Joni. It has been where we've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and family gatherings. It holds a special place for us. Last night did not disappoint.

When you win a big award (James Beard) expectations are high. Young Joni lives up to the expectations. The food is delicious, the service warm and friendly, the photo booth a plus that says ‘you’re part of this place’ and the atmosphere easy and relaxing. I’ll be back.

We were here to celebrate a birthday and indicated on the reservation. There was no acknowledgement of our celebration. The food was ok, vegetable sides were very very small in portion size for the price and the mushrooms came out cold or became cold quickly because of the sauce they used with it. The pizzas were good but nothing I would come back for. Overall it was fun to try but I don’t see myself going back.

Great ambiance! Tried the califlower and kimchi for apps. We didn’t see our server for a long time after that and got our kimchi but no cauliflower. When she finally came I asked about the cauliflower and she said abruptly (sort of Rudely) ‘I put the order in.’ Perhaps ‘it will be here in just a minute’ or ‘let me check on that’ would have been appreciated. Didn’t love the kimchi. I keep trying to like kimchi because I know it’s good foe me but no luck. Cauliflower was really good. Kind of a small portion for the price IMO. I ordered the Korean BBQ pizza and liked it. They offer Such interesting pizza choices! Wish I could order by the slice to try a bunch of them! My husband had the wings and thought they were great. We shared the ice cream with olive oil/sea salt. I’d probably ask for a little less salt next time but the olive oil/ice cream was strangely delicious! It was our anniversary but they don’t do anything special for that. Picture machine was broken so we didn’t get a pic (but paid for it). Loved that there is a free parking lot. Cute area. So glad I got to mark this place off my bucket list. I’ve been wanting to come for a long time.

Great food and a nice restaurant. The flavors and the different unique small bites were wonderful. Felt hurried to get out even though the entire length of our meal was less than an hour. I know they have to turn the tables but I don’t appreciate my plate being taken from under me while I hold the last bite in front of me. It was annoying and rude.

The fennel sausage and pepperoni had really nice flavors, however, I had higher hopes for the pizzas. Essentially they’re your traditional Neapolitan style pizza, made in a wood-fired oven. Don’t get me wrong, they were delicious, and are probably the best you’ll find in Minnesota. Great vibe, good drinks, awesome service!

What a great restaurant! Don’t judge a book by its cover. The exterior of this NordEast restaurant is very basic. However, the interior is beautiful. The food is fantastic. The service was excellent. I highly recommend.

This place is great. Nice out of the way location in the arts district, easy street parking, super super nice decor, and phenomenal service and food. The food was fantastic. Were there for brunch and had shakshuka, a pizza, and a dutch baby pancake for dessert. Everything was great, and great brunch cocktails as well!

Great businesses recognize it’s all about people. No matter your line of work, whether you’re an electrician, doctor, dentist, attorney or a manager at a restaurant, you are working with and for people. Treating people with kindness and respect is equally as fundamental to your success as what you’re selling. When it comes to food, there has always been something wonderfully cohesive about experiencing food with good people. Conversely, when the people serving you in a restaurant lack honest compassion and attentiveness, even the best of food can taste unpleasant. This past Saturday six of us 50-something professionals set out to have an enjoyable night of food and friends. We started at Travail Kitchen and Amusements (delightful!) We then decided to go on an impromptu pizza (not pub) crawl in the local area. Pig Ate My Pizza (perfect!); Pyscho Suzi’s (wonderful!), and then … Young Joni. We arrived at Young Joni at 10:30pm. Closing time is 12:00pm. We entered and were pleased to see the restaurant was only 25% full. Yes! No waiting! We are in! This night is going famously! Well, it was. But now, there is a bad apple who is going to ruin the bunch (our night). Read on. ... (Can't fit the whole review on Open Table character limits. See TripAdvisor or Facebook for the full review) ... Dan’s first explanation as to why they were treating us with uncaring brashness? “You said you only wanted to come in for drinks.” First of all, that’s not correct. More importantly, YOU JUST TOLD A PATRON THEIR ORDER ISN’T WORTHY OF BEING SERVED!?! (I told you he would confirm our theory as true!) ... It’s truly unfortunate this bad apple was able to ruin the bunch (our special evening). Sadly, given the ownerships hiring practices, I cannot recommend Young Joni as an establishment worthy of your time and money. Owner Ann Kim ~ Corporate advice: Employ the Fish Philosophy in your culture. Your service will then meet and exceed your food.
