Jolie-Laide is a small, avant-garde winery in Sonoma County, California, founded by Scott and Jenny in 2010. Their name, meaning "Pretty-Ugly" in French, reflects their philosophy of unconventional beauty. Known as pioneers of the "New California" movement, they emphasize natural winemaking with low intervention, whole-cluster fermentation, and early harvests to preserve acidity and freshness. They work with sustainably farmed vineyards and unique, lesser-known grape varieties. The winery also features changing, artistic labels each year, celebrating the artistry behind their wines.

We got lucky getting the best table in the restaurant, across from the bar in a nook under the stairs, so we easily heard each other! We chose a plant forward menu and our waiter Kai (sp?) decided on the order of the dishes. I’d trust his judgment again because we had a great time. The pigs head hid a shaved fennel and pear salad underneath. I delightfully learned how different parts of fennel tastes when shaved so finely. The Hokkaido scallops were soooo good and fresh and compared to a sushi restaurant, a very good value. My partner normally doesn’t like shellfish but he loved the scallops. We ended the savory portion of the meal with the seaweed noodles and the grilled cabbage with dill pickle butter and roe. Both plates had amazing, complimentary sauces and Kai brought us some bread to savor the last drops. The One Punch Man cocktail complemented entire the meal so well with its fruity yet creamy flavor. We got the chocolate semifreddo for dessert for the texture. It had a toasted umeboshi meringue that tasted like dates if they were slightly pickled. I left food drunk and with very happy tastebuds. I loved the restraint in all the flavors. I think a lot of dishes could’ve easily gone sideways in less capable hands, or even the meal because this menu had a lot of citrus and pickled items, and instead they nailed it just right.

Our experience at The Progress last night was a mix of highs and lows. Our server was fantastic—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely warm. We were also checked on by multiple staff members throughout the night, which made us feel well taken care of. However, we were disappointed by the sommelier. She provided incorrect information about the bottle of wine we ordered, which was honestly embarrassing for everyone at the table. Given the caliber of the restaurant, we expected a higher level of expertise in that regard. The food itself was excellent, though some dishes felt overly restrained in seasoning. While the ingredients and execution were clearly high-quality, a little more boldness in flavor would have elevated the experience. Ultimately, while we enjoyed the food and wine, the overall cost for two people was extremely high, and we struggled to find enough value to justify returning.

Everything was spot on - from the friendly, professional service to the range of creative, delicious dishes we tried. The caviar potato cloud was divine and a fun taste sensation. (You can share it, even though they always say you shouldn’t). The black rice coated fish was good and the duck was nice but all the starters really shone. The cauliflower was my favorite but the salad and charred cabbage also were yummy. A fantastic Saturday night experience!

Progress elevates everything in a dining experience. The seating is comfortable; food exceptional; and service even better. It is on the salty side, so may not be for everyone. Highly recommend it for all occasions.
