About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for scenic views
Situated in the Red Rocks country 17 miles southwest of Denver on Hwy 285, The Fort is a true replica of Bent's Fort, (1833-1849), the first American fur trade post in Colorado. The Cheyenne, Arapahoe, Kiowa and Pawnee traded and intermarried at Bent's Old Fort, creating an economic and peaceful exchange of cultures in an otherwise violent West. The Fort building is on the National Registry of Historic Places, and celebrates the many cultures that traded at Bent's Old Fort. Our menu features "New Foods of the Old West" including the best cuts of buffalo, elk and quail, grilled to perfection. There are vegetarian options inspired by American Indian recipes including Corn Beans and Squash, known as the Three Sacred Sisters. The wine list is awarded the Wine Spectator each year, and the nine dining rooms, with intimate seating, has a 350 seat capacity, with real adobe "beehive "fireplaces that burn wood in the winter and fall months. Romantic. Amazing views of the Valley and Mountains!

I found the restaurant through Harney and Son's tea website. They supposedly make a tea blend for them. This tea was not among the options offered to us. My lobster came brunt on the edges and clearly put through a broiler. They did offer us a free and tasty desert as we were celebrating our anniversary. Food was mediocre quality overall. The protein choices are what set it apart. Service was great from the team, but not worth the cost. I expected food perfection at $60-70 a plate. The pumpkin muffins and the empanadas were fabulous.

Very interesting location and historical recreation and the place to go for buffalo and elk and other game. Severs were very friendly and nice.

Something is off here. The "Fort" potatoes were almost inedible, and the prices are basically astronomical. The proteins served were done well, nice wine list. Service, eh = mostly selling you more stuff to eat. Beware the appetizer and drink list comes before they'll let you see the entree menu. Think there may be a method to that madness?

We’ve dined at the Fort many times in the last 10 years, I even had my rehearsal dinner there. This was the worst meal we’ve had in a long time. Buffalo filet ordered “medium” came out rare, sent back and redelivered medium rare. Spaghetti squash was inedible. Thankfully server removed that from our bill. The person assisting our server threw dessert spoons down on the table. Everyone was shocked with his behavior and attitude towards us. Likely was our last time there.

As always, it was a pleasure to dine at The Fort. The Denver Restaurant Week menu was a great value, too. Everyone at our table for 8 was pleased with the entree choices and our server was fast and friendly.

Through the years The Fort has been one of my favorite places to bring guests and treat myself. For this, a Restaurant Week night, it was typically terrific. Wonderful friendly and competent service, delicious flavorful and well-portioned courses and tremendous value-for-money. The atmosphere alone makes it worthy of a visit; everything else is why we keep coming back. Thank you for continuing to run a top-tier place Holly.
