In 1960, R. J. “Bob” Lee opened The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo Texas on Route 66, the “Mother Road”. It’s distinctive architecture soon became recognized across the Mother Road as a good stopping place for great steaks grilled over an open flame. The Big Texan is famous for the FREE 72oz steak challenge, which includes eating a salad, baked potato, shrimp cocktail and 72 ounces of beef! Stop in and have a one of a kind experience with large, juicy steaks, cowboys and cowgirls, and take a dive into the Old Wild West!

This was our first time here, and it was great! I would recommend making a reservation. We had a party of 8 and we waited 5 minutes once we checked in. I didn’t realize that the restaurant was 2 levels until we checked in. They were super helpful and accommodating to our request for a 1st level table due to knee issue one of our family members had. The atmosphere is super fun, portions are huge and the price is amazing! We will be back.

We were a large crowd and were able to sit together by there was a couple at the end of our table. Our server Christian got our orders correct. Overall the food was great but my husbands steak was overcooked. There is a couple of men that go around singing and playing a fiddle which was great. The food is pricey for us but worth the experience

I’ll admit, I wasn’t particularly excited about trying this place, but I was with a group that wanted to check it out. I’m glad we did! The atmosphere was lively and fun, setting the stage for a great meal. Our server started us off with fresh rolls, which were delicious. I originally planned to skip the salad, but after seeing how good they looked when others received theirs, I changed my mind—and I’m glad I did! The Caesar salad was excellent. For the entrée, we decided to share, opting for a filet and ribs. Both were outstanding—perfectly cooked and full of flavor. As for the sides, I had the corn and sweet potato. The corn, in particular, was incredible! Overall, a fantastic meal that exceeded my expectations. I’d definitely go back and may do so before we leave town!

Something this "shlocky" you would expect to fail on every count, but you would be wrong. Food was great and priced fairly. Staff was friendly and helpful. I will be back to The Big Texan if I get back to Amarillo. The Big Texan makes me want to come back to Amarillo. I would recommend them to everyone.

I’ve passed this place a few times and finally stopped. The atmosphere is great. The food had good flavor. Our waitress was attentive and beyond polite. It was busy yet the noise was manageable. I’m looking forward to stopping by every time when in the area. Don’t forget to try the delicious dessert.
