    MICHELIN 1 Star

    2022

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Andrew Zimmerman's seasonal American tasting menu is so good that this West Loop favorite has consistently held on to a MICHELIN Star since first getting one in 2011. You'll get to choose from several options in your four-course dinner, which might include dishes like crispy ricotta gnudi, roasted monkfish with little neck clams, and a sweet pea pavlova with meyer lemon sorbet. You'll definitely want to get the wine pairing—Sepia won Wine Spectator's 2022 Best of Award of Excellence. Eating here feels extra-special because it's housed in an 1890 print shop with Art Nouveau floors and exposed-brick walls.

Wow, just WOW. I will be dreaming of this four course meal forever now. It was my first chef tasting menu and it did not disappoint! Each dish was carefully crafted and curated. I LOVED IT!

The best dining experience of my life. Ashley provided exceptional service, Keith Meicher is the best bartender in the city, and the entire thing was more than worth the cost. Cannot recommend Sepia enough.

I consider myself a good at-home cook (for both western and Asian cuisines) and have tasted lots of great food with an extremely open mind. This was my first Michelin star experience. The menu and recipes are very well put together, but poorly executed when cooking skills are actually needed (for the main hot courses). Sea bass was overcooked. Beef rib did not have good marbling (on the dryer side) and overly salty breaking the balance between different components of the dish, and was told “it’s because we cook it with low temp for 48 hours” when I provided feedback to the server at the end of the meal. Right, if you sous vide something, you should know you are basically marinating the meat and it just sounded like an excuse. In addition, server said “Oh you should’ve said something when you first tasted it and we would make it right.” and proceeded to do nothing to make it right. (I did not want to ruin the overall experience of my anniversary dinner by breaking the flow of the already necessarily slow 2.5h experience for a 4-course menu.) Overall, while other reviews had mentioned how good of a value Sepia is being a Michelin 1-star (which I would agree if the main courses were done right), personally based on this very experience, while the overall service was good, it was not worth the money based on the taste of food alone (to my understanding, 1-stars are judged mainly on food more than anything else). When studying the menu prior of this reservation, I had wanted to try several other items on the menu, but it’s unlikely for me to go back again.

Visiting from London, my partner and I were looking for somewhere exceptional but not stuffy, for a reasonable price. Sepia fit the bill on all three counts. The space is ambient and intimate while remaining elevated. We were in the second seating and must admit it was almost too loud at the start of our service but quietened to a comfortable level over the course of the evening. The menu had brilliant selections, and taking the plunge on the wine pairing was a good idea for our choices in particular. Lovely service from start to finish - very personable, and the staff we met were a huge part of what made the experience so enjoyable. The food itself was wonderful, and at $110/pp it's a carefully considered and interesting menu which won't break the bank. Between myself and my partner we ordered 8 of the 16 dishes on offer and are still changing which was our favourite on an almost daily basis (my current frontrunner is the chocolate creme catalana paired with the Uruguayan Alcyone - completely indulgent but you only live once). There's a sense of humour to the menu, and without being too outre, creative flourishes hide in every dish - whether that's a reimagined classic, interesting flavour pairing, new texture, or thoughtful presentation. This was a relaxed treat night for us and we were delighted by the experience on every front. A wonderful evening, a highlight of our Chicago trip, and a great memory to take home with us (plus an Espresso Martini to die for).
