   The food is excellent and the breadbox is delicious. Just be forewarned, it's not the old Scales & Shells we all grew up with. It's a much more upscale dining experience with the prices to match. The service is professional and curt, not warm and effusive like the old days. Also, the portions are enough and you will not be taking home a to-go box for lunch the next day. All in all, very good for a romantic date night out.

   I would have given the overall experience a 5, however it was so cold in the restuarant we had to eat with our coats on. Many of the other patrons did the exact same thing. The oysters were delicious and the swordfish with lemon sauce was scrumptious and done to perfection. Our server was lovely. Way too cold! !

   We arrived 15 minutes early for our 7pm reservation, and did we get lucky! Our server rushed in an order of oysters to get the ‘buck a shuck’ deal before 7. Great service! Our food was all excellent thought I’d have liked a bit more on the plate 😀

   Nice restaurant but same issues with Newport restaurants located near the water down town - they all tend to be very expensive but the food isn't that great. Good service and good manager. Steak Frites were good but the rest of the meal missed.

    Scales & Shells in Newport RI has been one of our favorite restaurants for 20+ years. Recently, it changed ownership so we tried it out again and loved it. The Fried Calamari appetizer was every bit as good as it was in the past and the Linguini (fresh pasta) with Manila Clams was Excellent. Our server, Loretta, was very attentive and personable. We will definitely be back again.
