   We went on New Year’s Eve and were very disappointed. Sure, the place is cute and the service was good, but the food is just mediocre considering the price. We got the baked scallop special, which was just 4 colorless scallops on a bed of mashed potatoes and 2 mini carrots. Was it horrible, no. But it was mediocre… There’s a reason you sear scallops and don’t just cook them in the oven with zero seasoning. The Forage Board was fine, a couple of meats and cheeses, but the old soggy blueberries on the board were so unnecessary. The burger was too salty and the fries were undercooked. My wife and I love to splurge on nice meals but we definitely held back from ordering more food since we were so unimpressed. This is our second time here and we won’t be back. Oh and not to mention they sat us in this big tent they built in the back of the restaurant, which was no more than about 60 degrees inside. My wife and I were so cold we asked to move us inside, which they happily accommodated. I get they’re trying to maximize their space but don’t jam people into a freezing tent to make a few extra bucks.

   Our experience was incredibly disappointing, particularly for what is marketed as one of the nicer restaurants in Boulder. From start to finish, the service and accommodations fell drastically below expectations, making for an uncomfortable and frustrating evening. We booked the heated, covered patio, expecting it to be warm and reasonably enclosed. Instead, we were seated in the back corner of a drafty tent with 20-degree gusts of wind blowing through. The “heating” consisted of one space heater for our long table, leaving half of us shivering and entirely unheated. It was beyond unreasonable, even for an outdoor reservation in winter. After several complaints, they offered to move us indoors after a 20-minute wait, which we accepted. However, instead of holding our food as agreed, they served it outside. When I expressed concerns, the staff ignored or dismissed me. When we finally moved indoors, I addressed the situation with the manager, thanking him for finding a solution while sharing how poorly it had been handled. Even though he told us they were short on heaters because some were broken, he didn’t apologize once, instead arguing we shouldn’t have been cold. It was unprofessional and invalidating. To make matters worse, the service was subpar. Drinks were delayed, the food was mediocre, and no dessert menu was offered. The “compensation” was a 10% discount and one appetizer, presented as “extremely generous.” It felt passive-aggressive rather than conciliatory. As we left, the waitress made a snide comment: “I hope you have the New Year you deserve.” It was shocking and left us stunned. Dining out is a special occasion for me, and River And Woods failed on every front. If you’re looking for a welcoming and enjoyable experience, avoid this place.

   Came up to Boulder for a night away and booked River and Woods on a whim. Best, happy accident, because everything was great. Good food, even better service!

   Food and cocktails are consistently good at River and Woods. Wish they would have had more unique options on the New Year’s Eve menu.
