Review summary
AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Osteria Mattarello offers a delightful dining experience with "excellent service" and a "hidden gem" atmosphere. The pizzas, especially the "pepperoni," are standout favorites, though some reviewers desire a thinner crust. The appetizers like deep-fried calamari are praised, and the pasta dishes are "fabulous." Ideal for a cozy meal in Markham.

I booked a reservation for 8:15 PM, eager for a night out with my date. Unfortunately, the experience turned out to be anything but pleasant. From the moment we were seated, we faced a series of disappointments.
First off, I had to chase down a waiter just to get some water for myself and my date. We decided to keep it simple and ordered one spicy pizza. After waiting for over 50 minutes, a waitress came by to ask what we had ordered, despite having already informed a waiter earlier. When the pizza finally arrived, it was a total letdown—doughy and undercooked. I've received better service and food at run-down restaurants in the underdeveloped parts of the city. The hospitality was lacking, and to top it off, there was no compensation or apology for the late and poorly cooked food.
I paid the bill but left a $0.00 tip, expressing my disappointment to the front-of-house staff and advising them to manage orders more promptly. I sincerely hope the management or owner reads this review and takes it to heart, as I left the restaurant feeling utterly disappointed.

While the food was good, the staff was not.
The place was cold and no ambience.
Typical get them and get them out.
On a good note the young man at the door was great, he actually had yo become our server. The staff seemed very uninterested in serving us.
Don't be back.

Great food, service and atmosphere! The pepperoni pizza was one of the best weve ever had! We enjoyed the branzino and rose rigatoni too. Excellent service with friendly staff! Well be back!

The restaurant is beautiful, however the lack of service was appalling.
The mushroom and chicken parm were decent but the pizza was terrible. We had to bring it home to add more toppings on it to finish it bc we do not waste food

Overall a good experience for fine dining. Their plating and flavours were presented well. Our server, Ricky was wonderful. Very experienced and was happy to offer suggestions. We ordered all (but 2) of their appetizers, the grilled octopus, beef tartar, Sicilian salmon crudo were good. Must try, the pomelo (instead of peach) prosciutto in burrata, the flavours and textures were excellent & perfectly paired. Also delicious and commendable was the Frittura Di Mare lightly battered deep fried zuchini, shrimp and calamari. The Shrimp (lobster broth) risotto needed to be slow cooked as it was too Al dente. The flavours of the burrata margherita and mushroom truffle (touch too much honey) pizza were excellent but wished the crust was thinner with at least 48hr rise dough as it felt more like a deep dish pizza consistency. Wished the duck confit not have been cut into such large cubes as a pasta dish. The gelatos; pistachio and raspberry were delicious as was the Ricotta pistachio cake was light and moist. Lattes, especially Nutella (just a hint, not too sweet) latte were excellent. Enjoyed the Dolomia sparkling water from Italy and the Ziraldo Prosecco paired well with everything. We’ve studied and travelled thru Italy (plus lived/work in Woodbridge) so we’re looking for an authentic Italian restaurant in Markham. Hope we’re not being too critical. It’s been a long time since someone raised the bar on good Italian food in Markham or Richmond Hill since fine dining Italian restaurants like Massimo Capra’s Fratticelli’s which has since shuttered. Places like Il Postinos has not kept up their food quality. Hope OM will consider our suggestions to keep foodies like us coming back for more!

We had a wonderful meal with a very friendly staff. The pasta dishes we had were fabulous and the portions were perfect. I would recommend this restaurant to all and it will become a business dinner destination moving forward.
