Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Jason Peel

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Jason Peel is known nationally as the former executive chef for Roy’s Waikiki and beloved locally as a cooking instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. He opened his own restaurant Nami Kaze in 2022, quickly scoring a couple of James Beard Award nominations for izakaya-style small plates, both hot and cold, that star ingredients from favorite local farmers and fishermen. Be sure to try the hamachi rolls, plus the honey walnut shrimp stacked on waffles at brunch.

Review summary

Nami Kaze offers a vibrant dining experience with "imaginative mocktails" and "excellent" dishes like the ulu tots and lobster BLT salad. Despite some mixed reviews on the prix fixe lunch menu, the restaurant's "unique flavors" and "friendly, efficient staff" create a memorable visit. Ideal for dinner, where sharing plates shine.

We dined here a couple of years ago and I would say it was a solid 4 star experience. However, after our recent experience I would have to drop it to a 3 star. Some of the food was kind of bland tasting.

They always have a delish menu on deck. Love coming monthly to check out what’s new. Their drink menu always wows me as well. Such quality ingredients are used and their service is top notch. Sit at the bar top or sushi counter to be near the action with a date.

This was my second visit for lunch...food was excellent. I loved the combinations of each dish. It's a take on classic local food with a nice blend of other seasonings to round off the dish. Nice job Chef!

I love chiso so the Chu Hi Sai went well with the Amber-jacked sushi roll! Such fresh ingredients and friendly, knowledgeable service. It's one of my favorite places in Honolulu!

Had an amazing lunch at Nami Kaze. We had the prefix menu for April. Each section had options to meet most people's taste and dietary needs. The amuse (mushroom gyoza) and dessert were fixed. But the starter and entree had several options to choose from. For the starter i had roasted vegetables and my entre was fried ginger chicken, grandma's potato salad, zucchini namasu, and fresh ahi poke. It was delicious. All that for $45. Great service, our server was professional, friendly, and knew his menu items. Can't wait to eat here again.

Some menu items were outstanding (Lobster BLT Salad, Glory Bay Salmon, Matcha Basque Cheesecake). Some menu items were unremarkable in taste, and therefore absolutely not worth the price the restaurant charges (Hapa Cattle Co. Short Rib, California maki). The ambiance was great, our server was nice, but probably won't return for a while unless I need to.

We had a truly fine meal at Nami Kaze. We had an assortment of dishes, all excellent and some frankly brilliant. The ulu tots were fun and tasty, the day boat scallops with asparagus perfectly done, the crunchy eggplant roll really good (and crunchy). Dessert was a deconstructed lemon meringue pie and banana bread, both top notch. Service was very prompt and informative from a friendly and helpful person. The mocktails were quite imaginative and good. All in all we really enjoyed the dinner!

The move to the prix fixe lunch has taken this place off my list. $45 for things I don’t want. Not happening. I’m sure it’s about reducing overhead because of how extensive their menu was but I’m out. I might try again for dinner someday but my fave lunch date with my husband is no more. I’m so disappointed.
