From the creators of Sweet Basil in Vail Colorado comes a fresh, innovative new restaurant opening December 2012. Aptly named Mountain Standard, this rustic and relaxed tavern aims to set a new standard in the Vail valley by using an ancient form of cooking.

The majority of Mountain Standard’s menu will be prepared via the most primal cooking method: over an open and live wood fire. The only restaurant in the valley to devote themselves to this age-old way of cooking, the food at this exciting new restaurant will have rustic, bold and honest flavors, focusing on the purest ingredients in the Rocky Mountain region and beyond.

Service, like the cuisine, will have that perfect balance of providing a first class dining experience with a more casual vibe. There is no smoke and mirrors here - no fuss - just simple, honest, from the heart service and cooking. The beauty of the creek side location is mirrored by the high energy vibe of this dynamic restaurant.

A $185 Scam Served on a Plate If you’re looking for a restaurant that blatantly deceives its customers, refuses to take accountability, and insults your intelligence, look no further. Our recent visit to Mountain Standard was an exercise in frustration, disappointment, and outright fraud. After several appetizers, we ordered “the special”, a 25 oz “family style” porterhouse steak -a premium cut with a premium price tag of $185. Our waitress assured us this would be plenty to feed our group. What arrived at our table was a 10 oz ribeye, complete with a bone that clearly didn’t match the meat. Apparently, the kitchen staff thought we wouldn’t know the difference. When we pointed this out, it became obvious there was a deception. The waitstaff had no answers and deferred to the manager Katie, whose response was as outrageous as the switch itself: 1.They could credit the steak, “she would remove it from the table” and our kids would have to wait even longer for another dish. 2.Or we could pay $180 for a gristly undersized, fatty cut for one person, not four! This was no tomahawk ribeye. 3.And her reasoning? They ran out of the porterhouse… yesterday. Wow. So rather than informing us they had none, they knowingly served us a completely different, inferior cut, charged us the same price, and hoped we wouldn’t notice. And when we did? No apology. No ownership. Just an ultimatum. It should NEVER be the burden of the customer to dictate the resolution of such an egregious blunder. Any mgmt staff with integrity would have immediately comped the item (or meal) and then worked to make things right—not tried to gaslight us into accepting their scam. A restaurant that aspires to Michelin-star status should know better. In Vail, where exceptional dining options abound, there is absolutely no reason to waste your time or money here. This wasn’t a mistake. Jana - no need to respond unless you want to correct this situation as it should have been taken care of originally.

Good was phenomenal! The service left much to be desired. With the built in gratuity of 25 percent for a large party I excepted much better. Many of our drink glasses were empty for long and we had to track down our waitress on more than one occasion.

We were so excited to come here this week we actually made 3 reservations, 2 for dinner and one for lunch, as it was easily our favorite restaurant the last time we came here 2 years ago. Not sure what happened but food was not good. Appetizers were ok but entrees were inedible. Place was so loud it was hard to talk. We cancelled the other reservations as not sure what happened but this place has gone downhill.

This was our second trip to Mountain Standard and we haven’t been disappointed yet. Our first visit was at lunch about a year ago and it was fantastic, so we decided to give it a try during the dinner hour. All 5 in our party ordered a different entree and we were all blown away. The rotisserie chicken, the pork shank, the tri tip, the salmon crudo and the pork chop were all excellent choices. The pork chop was juicy and tender-cooked perfectly. Highly recommend the country ham biscuits with pepper jelly and the smoked salmon appetizer. And do not miss the frozen Snickers bar dessert. It’s worth it for the fun presentation alone! There was not one aspect of our meal that was not outstanding. The only issue (not a big deal) was that the large party next to us was loud. Not unexpected, given the location. No matter, it wouldn’t stop me from going back. No wonder I had to wake up in the middle of the night, exactly 30 days prior to make a reservation! And I’ll happily do it again on my next visit. Make sure you “order” the kitchen sauce on the dessert menu ($15) to buy the kitchen staff a round of beers. They loudly show their appreciation! So much fun! A great way to give them a “way to go”!

Our family of four visited Mountain Standard by recommendation from a friend. Very tough to get a reservation, and we were put on a list a month ago. The reservation came through while we’re were in Vail, so we moved some things around and visited the establishment on 3/22. The vibe is cool and the decor is contemporary. The server was very attentive the entire time, and our water glasses were always full. My wife had some altitude and dehydration issues, and the server and team made sure she was okay throughout the dinner. We appreciated that special attention. The appetizers were amazing, and the baba ganoush was incredible. The dinners were very tasty. I had the pork chop, and it was full of flavor with sauces and pecans on top and on the side. The kids each had the tri tip and my wife loved the chicken. The desserts were creative, and their version of tiramisu was terrific. They have time limits on tables, but they never pushed us. We enjoyed Mountain Standard immensely and will return. Vail has many fine restaurants, but Mountain Standard is definitely near the top!

Hey Philip, thank you for your glowing review! We're thrilled to hear that you and your family had a great time with us. We are so bummed your wife wasn't feeling well due to altitude sickness but it makes us so happy that our team made her feel well taken care of. We appreciate your kind words and look forward to welcoming you back soon!
