The Mountain House has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. Serving as a rest stop for travelers, loggers and homesteaders in the Santa Cruz Mountains- we have evolved into a beloved destination known for our Coastal Countryside cuisine and rustic, intimate ambiance. Offering a menu highlighting game meats, locally sourced ingredients, and a curated selection of California and Old World wines, the Mountain House is one of the most unique settings in California. From a roadhouse to fine dining, the unassuming red cabin has stood the test of time along with the majestic redwoods that surround it.

Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by distinguished chefs Dmitry Elperin and William Roberts. We offer a three-course prix fixe menu for in our dining rooms and additionally, we serve an à la carte menu in our bar and lounge, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Take the scenic route to The Mountain House, where nature, history, and hospitality converge.

The drive takes a bit to get there but the view is beautiful. I ordered the fettuccini with white truffles, elk burger with brioche bun, and banana coconut cream pie. The fettuccini portion was small but tasted great. The elk burger was just ok and only had cheese and grilled onions so it was missing flavor. I would have liked it if they added tomatoes, avocado, and maybe some spices. The banana coconut pie had a hard crust and was just ok. It tasted like a cheap pastry you would buy at a grocery store so maybe their pastry maker was out for the evening. The book & mahogany drink was excellent! I like scotch and manhattans and this drink hit the spot. My guests had a rib eye and I tried it, it was cooked perfect and tasted great! So your experience will vary based upon the food. The service was just ok. They charged me for having bread while waiting for my guests but then brought over bread for free with our meal. It felt weird. Ultimately, it was a decent experience. Too long of a drive for an ok meal. Not quite sure what all the hype was other than the nice drinks. Staff needs training on etiquette and charging for bread is just weird for a fine dining when food is marked up to make up for basic amenities like bread. Gratuity is automatically charged which is likely why the service was a bit off. Drinks took over 15 minutes so the bar seems to be behind. I eat at many fine dining restaurants so I guess my past experiences set my expectations. I could see potential down the road, but they have a bit to go before they get there.

The wagyu (some sort of Aus/NZ hybrid) definitely wasn't worthy of the $60 upcharge (in addition to the prix fixe). The cut was just too chewy. The second entree was ordered without onions. Well, it arrived with onions.... Does one send it back and have one person in your party staring at everyone else eating while their dish is being remade? The person delivering entrees from the kitchen was about as stiff as a board. He's likely a high school or college kid hired for the holidays, but someone failed to train him in some basic server skills. Desserts were middle of the road, especially given the holiday season. Flourless chocolate cake and creme brulee a couple days before Christmas? Trying not to come across as being picky here, but I've had better dining experiences here before. Maybe it was an "off night," but it's hard to give a pass given the reputation and prices.

This place is a gem especially during the holidays! The chefs are incredible and over deliver on quality and quantity. The decor and fireplaces make this place unique and special: cozy mountain vibes.

This was our second visit to Mountain House, and definitely not our last. Service is top notch, and the food is so tasty…and the setting can’t be beat.

We celebrated our wedding anniversary at the Mountain House Restaurant, and it was an unforgettable experience. The food was absolutely fantastic, with every dish prepared to perfection and full of flavor. The service was outstanding—attentive, warm, and made us feel truly special on our special day. It was the perfect place to celebrate such a significant milestone. Highly recommend

This is the place to go for a very special evening out. We like the glassed-in Forest Room which has a great view of the beautiful redwood grove. The choices on the pre fixe menu are all delicious and the ambience can't be beat. The only thing I wish could be improved is that, due to the hard surfaces of the glass and walls, it gets a bit loud in there with all the people talking and the music playing. It can be a little challenging if you are hard of hearing and/or need to wear hearing aids. In spite of that, you can't beat the food and the setting!
