Momotaro is a multi-level Japanese restaurant located in the West Loop. Led by Executive Chef Gene Kato, Momotaro has had the honor of being named Restaurant of the Year in both Chicago Magazine and Chicago Social. Under Kato’s leadership the restaurant has come to define the balance between traditional values and modern technique, blending the two in a science and art that has resulted in an authentic, innovative menu. The restaurant, designed by the world renowned AvroKO, also contains the subterranean Izakaya at Momotaro (a laid back, lively lower-level bar and restaurant reminiscent of the neon-lit haunts of trendy Tokyo neighborhoods) and an elegant second floor private space that overlooks the main dining room.

Staff were unwelcoming. All the food we ordered except the nigiri was uninspired and uninteresting. Drinks were overpriced. Tables are packed in too tightly. Restaurant was super loud.

Our experience here was delightful! A great casual date night or friend group gathering spot. The food was superb we enjoyed the Scallop Motoyaki 10/10 Shio Koji Sake 10/10 Karai Tuna 7/10 Negi Hamachi 8/10 The service was speedy but efficient and they brought everything we ordered fairly quickly. They also did a birthday desert for my partner which was very sweet, both the gesture and the dessert. Our server Justin was very accommodating and helpful in every aspect, along with the host and all the workers.

I would say the value here is not on par. We spent just under $600 for three people. At $200/person I left satiated not full, and im not obese. I'm also going to comment on alcohol prices. $18 for one measured ounce on a neat pour of $45/bottle whiskey - really? I'm not sure who is eating here that orders slightly more than a pigeon eats to get them at $$ rated price vs $$$$ which it actually is. Service from our server was actually sub par at this price point as well. Michelin prices demand Michelin service so I'm going to be very honest here. Food quality was on point. I mean EXCEPTIONAL over the top good. We had wagyu steak, scallops, tuna belly, fried rice, maguro cold appetizer, and wagyu sliders as well as three various rolls and salmon sashimi. The fish quality was superb. The wagyu steak was prepared perfectly and literally melted in your mouth. I gave 4 stars overall for the aforementioned reasons above but to summarize if you care to achieve Michelin status: Service attentiveness/speed. Neat whiskey is 1.5oz everywhere! even when I buy Pappy it's coming in at 1.5oz. Portions to price. I had to buy 3x the menu price on half of what I ordered to get enough for 3 people to try food. That is deception and poor marketing. At a minimum every item should be providing for two people to taste.

I think there are a lot of better choices at that price point. Felt a bit like a chain compared to when I went pre covid. Still had some good items but so many better places for the price.

The sashimi was still frozen when it was served.

Hi Abby, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We sincerely apologize for serving sashimi that was not at the right temperature. While we pride ourselves on using fresh fish that is carefully stored on ice to maintain its quality, it seems we fell short during your visit. We completely understand how disappointing this must have been, and we’ll be reviewing our processes to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve, and we truly hope to provide you with a better experience next time. Thank you, Merissa White General Manager Momotaro & The Izakaya

Went here with my girlfriend on New Year’s Eve. It was fabulous. The Tako So was the best octopus I have had and the Kohitsuji (lamb) was to die for. Outstanding service as well. This is one of the best spots in town.
