    MICHELIN 1 Star2024

From the OpenTable editors: Venezuelan chefs Tatiana Mora and Miguel Guerra earned a MICHELIN Star for their exemplary plant-based menus that you can try in a 14-course tasting or four- and six-course prix-fixes (and an a la carte at the bar). Think creative dishes like watermelon crudo and an arepa sampler with sauces like creamy guasacaca alongside colorful cocktails and wines from South America. Savor it all in an industrial-chic space surrounded by glass windows and with flower garlands draped over the bar. It’s all led to rave reviews, including by The Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema.

Review: Mita Missed the Mark When you advertise Michelin-star recognition and premium pricing, expectations naturally rise. Unfortunately, Mita fell short. From the moment we walked in, service felt chaotic and impersonal. We were greeted by at least four different servers, each repeating the same questions: “Still or sparkling?” “Whose birthday is it?” At one point, someone tried to refill a glass that was already full, insisting, “We like to keep the water topped up.” It was not a great start — more confusion than coordination. Small details matter, especially in fine dining. Our table was clearly damaged, and we noticed other signs of neglect in the decor. For a restaurant with a Michelin star, these details were disappointing. Service throughout the evening felt stiff and unrefined. It wasn’t about accents — we appreciate diversity — but about clarity. We struggled to understand dish descriptions and kept referring back to the menu just to follow along. That shouldn’t happen at this level. The meal opened with a piece of candy wrapped in rice paper, served on an agave leaf over herbal smoke. It felt more gimmick than gourmet — something you might find at an Asian market rather than the start of a Michelin-starred experience. The early courses leaned heavily on sweetness. A wild rice dish was overwhelmed by a cloying sauce and raisins. Once the mood began to dip, it never recovered. Dessert didn’t redeem things. A cherry bubble sauce tasted more like room fragrance, and the mochi wrapper had all the charm of cardboard. As we looked out through the restaurant’s many windows, we saw people walking by with boxes of Andy’s Pizza from next door. Honestly, we wished we’d done the same — and saved $500.

Delicious plant-based dishes that played nicely with texture, temperature, and balance. Their wine pairings were thoughtful and enjoyable, the wines were often heightened by the dish they were served with. The staff was all incredibly kind and attentive.

I chose Mita to celebrate my husband's birthday, and we weren't disappointed. We loved the food, the service, and I particularly like the music. We go to different restaurants every Saturday mostly in D.C. and Mita is one of the restaurants we are planning to come back. It could be a bit pricy, but the amount of food served and the exclusivity of their dishes are certainly worth it.

This was the most amazing meal! Everything was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, described in a way that made your mouth water and was served with grace and dignity. Each server was nicer than the next and every course delivered by a server well versed in what was being offered. The respect for the food and art of the flavors and theme of each dish was reflected in the way each course was described. We loved the ambiance, the beautiful cutlery, glass and tableware. Everywhere you look in the restaurant you lay your eyes on something calming and exquisitely designed. The attention to detail and commitment to perfection is clear in every part of this restaurant. Simply stated - perfect experience.
