We visited for the 1st time in a few years as we’d seen it’s been refurbished and in principle the lunch deal seemed, and was, very good value. However, I ordered a club sandwich which came with egg in it which I don’t eat and which is not a normal part of a club sandwich, but was not mentioned in the menu description. No big deal, I’m not allergic and my wife and I swapped lunches but it meant we both ate meals we didn’t particularly want. I raised it with the person running service when we finished and they promised to raise it with the team to include a better description on the menu. I didn’t ask for or imply any desire for any reduction in the bill or anything like that - our call to have eaten up before mentioning it - but I was disappointed that they seemed to imply it was my fault because ‘this pub has always put egg in their club sandwich’. Of course if you hope for new people to visit, or regulars to try something different, there’s always going to be a first time they order it, so I thought that was a bit weird. We ate all our food so we paid all our bill without quibble, but I left feeling a bit sad that we’ll probably not go back as I was made to feel a bit stupid for not knowing something that a) I couldn’t have known, and b) that spoiled my lunch. This is a stunning pub to be in and over the 20 yrs I’ve been living here I’ve spent a reasonable amount of time here including a few meals and birthdays etc, , just not in the last few years. Other peoples lunches looked tasty and I’m sure most people who visit will have a much better experience. However, I think ours probably means we won’t be back anytime soon. It just felt a little like because we’d had the cheaper lunch deal and aren't regulars we weren’t within our rights to give feedback. But at the end of the day, if it had been great, we’d probably have been back to try the a la carte soon enough. Do visit and form your own opinion, I think we were probably just unlucky. But beware surprise eggs.
