Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Joel Stocks

From the OpenTable editors: One of the New York Times's 50 favorite restaurants of 2024, L'Orange charms with its refined, Pacific Northwest-influenced Mediterranean small plates and superbly curated wine in a homey, cozy atmosphere. The combo quickly captivated local critics and diners, who show up in droves for dishes like roasted garlic soup with grapes or poached and grilled cauliflower with curried granola. It all obviously pairs beautifully with owner Jeff Vejr's large, varied selection.

Philosophy

At L'Orange we hope to transport you back to a time when full service dining was the norm. We hope that you feel the warmth of our space, the ease of our hospitality, and the delicious layers of flavors that our food and wine provide.

Perfection! We’ve never had a dinner here we weren’t thrilled by: beautiful dishes thoughtfully prepared and absolutely delicious. The ambiance is so quaint and lovely and the staff is so friendly. Even though it’s relatively new, it feels like old Portland in the best possible ways.

Food was fantastic. Be aware when booking that the restaurant has a room with normal tables and another one with a lounge vibe. We sat in the lounge room and it wasn’t the most comfortable seating for two people.

The food was very good, especially the cheese which would be the perfect end to this meal (instead of an appetizer). The lamb crepe was also a highlight. We sat neglected for well over 20 minutes when we were seated and regularly throughout the meal while the server had lengthy conversations with the table next to us. We were also appalled to be charged for a bread refill when the server presented the refill as a courtesy. We ended up paying $13 for 8 slices of baguette and butter.

Compared to the hype, it was overwhelmingly average, with an air of overconfidence. The onion soup - not great, overly acidic. Scallops, pretty good. Smoked sturgeon, very good. The crepe - massive disappointment. The crepe was neither soft or crisp, but was just kind of "dried out" from the oven reheat. The filling felt like something a cook would make for the staff dinner from last weeks lamb shank special. Service was not good, ranging from overly precious descriptions of every step used to make the dish, to what I think was the dishwasher running our plates out. That got us out of the 10-minute soliloquy describing each plate at least. One bread plate we got was a mess, but had been through some washing attempt, but not well done. As we waited to ask for another, I watched our server grab three side plates for another table to share, inspecting each. Two of the three were set aside and replaced, and were taken to the back for rewashing. When we asked for a new plate, the dude asked us if he'd gotten a smudge of butter on it. 1) That's a wild approach. 2) He knows plates are coming out dirty - I watched him inspect 3 and reject 2. 3) His half-hearted explanation and even weaker apology matched his general demeanor. It felt a bit like an episode of Portlandia, where the place had an exaggerated air of self importance while nobody seemed to believe in any of it. I genuinely do not understand the hype.

The duck confit was extraordinary, and the smoked sturgeon equally tasty. The portions were ample for a gourmet French restaurant, which I appreciated. The cozy welcoming atmosphere and friendliness of the waitstaff allowed us to sit back and enjoy our time there.
