About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
To welcome in 2025 we are offering a special lunch and pre-theatre menu. £20 for 2 courses and £25 for 3 (plus service). It is an amazing bargain for the whole of January.

L'Escargot is London's oldest and most celebrated French restaurant serving classic French dishes. Favourite dishes include French onion soup, Lobster bisque, oysters, Tournedos "Rossini", grilled lobster, Chateaubriand and of course snails ! L'Escargot was voted one of the most romantic restaurants in London and is a perfect spot to celebrate a birthday or anniversary.

If you want to come in just for a drink, upstairs there is a great cocktail bar with reasonably priced cocktails and a bar snack menu.

The restaurant has welcomed celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Charles de Gaulle, Maurice Chevalier, Laurence Olivier, Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon. and was a favourite of Princess Diana

L'Escargot is located close to all the major West-End theatres, which makes it an excellent pre and post theatre dining spot.

Lived up to all expectations. I took a friend for a birthday lunch. From the moment we arrived we had a lovely time. The staff are charming and efficient and not intrusive, a rare combination. The food was delicious - I had goats cheese tartine which was perfectly dressed and seasoned with really good quality goats cheese and properly ripe figs and a hint of honey. I followed with mushroom and truffle risotto - so hard to get right but they did We ended with shared tarte au citron which did not disappoint. We could also hear each other talk - again a rare thing. Will definitely go back

We loved the crab starter, the terrine wasn't very flavourful and were quite disappointed with it unfortunately. Nice house red was reasonably priced at £9/glass. For main we both had the duck, which was itself excellently cooked and the broth flavourful, but the beans were underdone which was disappointing. I also didn't like the fennel in it byt that's a personal preference. Very parisien ambience and decor which was nice, it was quite quiet when we were there 6.45pm on a Tuesday. We'd have been better to go earlier and do the set menu price, as we didn't feel it justified the main menu price.

A little disappointed as it was good but not great. Service was very attentive and the place is very French but the main courses were very average and the prices were ridiculous even for London.

We all thought the food was excellent, the snails, the Fois gras, The mushroom risotto divine, and everybody who had various males thought it was outstanding. The only minor criticism I would say is that the waiters need to get rid of the cigarette smell from their breath when they clearly have a break during service. One of the guests mentioned it to me, but apart from that their service was exceptional. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We had an absolutely fabulous Sunday Lunch at L’Escargot for my husband’s birthday. The Onion Soup was absolutely the best I have ever tasted, the snails were delicious and the roast beef was out of this world. The chocolate soufflé is absolutely worthy the wait. Service was attentive and polite, our sever even noticed the birthday cards on the table and so without being asked a birthday treat arrived. Fabulous.

Excellent atmosphere, very friendly staff, delicious dishes and impeccable service. Pleasantly surprised to encounter a cocktail menu with so many signature and classic cocktails. I was somehow expecting less choice so that was a bonus. Loved the décor and the fact that the restaurant is an oasis of calm in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Soho. Definitely would recommend
