About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Great for creative cocktails
Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

First time at Le Coq and we will return. Our server was outstanding - I wish I remembered his name to properly thank him. We were celebrating our anniversary and he was very gracious, wishing us a happy anniversary and a great evening. My husband had a glass of wine and I thoroughly enjoyed a cerise et citron cocktail minus the firewater bitters. It was delicious! After looking over the menu, we decided to share a few items so we could taste as much as possible. We started with what was our favorite - the kanpachi (amberjack) crudo with a yummy ume vinaigrette, thinly sliced apples and a shallot jam. It was amazing and I'd order it again as my entree!! We then tried the onion tart - it was good, not great. A little on the greasy side with the short ribs in the center. We wouldn't order it again. We then shared a Denver steak and the kitchen was nice to split it for us. We paired that with a side of mushrooms and onions and a bordelaise sauce that was a bit salty for my taste, although my husband loved it. The steak was properly cooked and plenty for the two of us. We also shared the pomme darphin dish and definitely wouldn't order that again - it was a deep fried rectangle of shredded potatoes over creme fraiche and trout roe. The creme fraiche and trout roe were very good but the potatoes were very oily and pretty flavorless. That was the most disappointing dish of the night. We were too full to try a dessert but I heard the couple next to us rave about the cheesecake. Maybe next time! The place was packed and loud so conversation was difficult but overall, we enjoyed ourselves and will return to try a few other dishes and get that kanpachi crudo once again!!!

Loved it!! Great food, service and really enjoyed the lively atmosphere. The basque cheesecake was unbelievable. And you have to get the baguette.

Noisy restaurant and only half full on a Thursday evening at 7. The food was good, 'though not outstanding. The menu was quite limited. Presentation was definitely poor an unimaginative.

We went for our anniversary and the service was spectacular! Our waiter went above and beyond and had a very charismatic personality. We went on a Sunday night and it was not as busy so it felt very intimate and we were able to enjoy the ambience a little more. Their food is really good and their deserts left me wanting seconds.

Service was chaotic…everything from hostesses, bartenders, and waitstaff seemed inexperienced and lacked care and interest. Food was okay to good. Not worth going back
