Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

Le Coq was on my list for a few weeks-months now. I just got back from a trip to Paris so naturally, was looking forward to more French inspired food. While the food overall was delicious, it definitely has an asian-fusion flair. My favorites of the entire meal were actually the bistro salad and the pistachio mousseline dessert. Cocktails were wonderful and very well done/balanced. I favored the Framboise Tonic (gin based cocktail, a Negroni-riff) and The Lumiere (I believe this was mentioned as a seasonal cocktail). With the onion tart sliding in for an honorable mention... Ambience was terrific and whoever designed the interior did a great job. Some tables were a little tight in proximity, but overall not a bother to the atmosphere. Great lively date night spot if you're looking for a more elevated experience.

The spiny lobster was mushy and had no taste. Our steak was very average and lukewarm. The butter that is supposed to be so good was beyond disappointing. It had flavor but NOT enjoyable flavor. It was our anniversary dinner and we were extremely disappointed. We knew it would be pricey, but we’re happy to pay for an expensive dinner if the food was exceptional. There was nothing about the meal that was exceptional. We asked another couple to join us to celebrate our anniversary and kept having to apologize for the disappointing meal.. at the end of a dinner of fine dining, I asked myself would I go back there. A resounding no!!

Delicious dinner with friends. Onion Tart, muscles, baguette w chicken skin butter, and the celery salad were our starters. Loved them all. Dinner choices were gnocchi, swordfish, steak frites, and the chicken. Again all were delicious. Desserts were also tasty with the pistachio creme puff (light and creamy) and the chocolate cake (rich and decadent). Cocktails were on point! Overall everything was great! 4/5 stars as nothing blew my socks off. High quality food but nothing blew me away. Would definitely go back.

Pretty nice deco and ambience. Music sort of loud. The short rib was not warm thru in the middle. The midium rare steak was cold and raw in the middle. More like a rate. We sent back to the kitchen they made it right. All the foods ate deliciou flavored

We dined here for our anniversary and had Chris as our waiter. He was excellent and very knowledgeable. The onion tart and baguette were delicious, would come back for those alone!

Overall we had an excellent meal, where we tried steak tartar, tuna tartar, muscles, onion pie, lamb rack, gnocchi and steak/frites. For this level of restaurant, I would have expected better service where the restaurant wasn't full and we had a reservation, yet had to wait 10min. Also, during the meal I would have expected sharing plates and knowing who is getting which starter.

Outstanding food and service. The baguette with chicken skin butter and the smoked bone-in short rib were exceptional. Appreciate the additional complimentary dessert for our anniversary.
