Nestled in the serene beach town of Encinitas, our California Bistro and Natural Wine Bar offers a mix of traditional Spanish flavors with a modern Mediterranean twist, complemented by an exquisite selection of natural wines. Menu favorites include the Maitake Mushroom toast and tahini "aioli", our Green Chile Burger with gruyere cheese, and our locally sourced blue fin tuna crudo with citrus vinaigrette. We play a mix of Brazilian funk, late 90's hip-hop, and French pop all through our vintage Marantz receiver and JBl speakers. Our dimly lit cozy restaurant is ideal for date nights and post-surf hangs.

The “taqueria” is a bistro and wine bar near the south end of the Lumberyard shopping center. The atmosphere is crowded and casual, even leaning toward beach town funky. Noise levels indoors are a little high. On warmer nights, dine outdoors. It has a short, eclectic menu. We had the sourdough bread, $10, and the meatballs, $18, for starters. The bread came with sweet corn butter with Parmesan. A tasty combination. But the bread was burnt, so a little crunchy. The four meatballs came with bread and were served in a tomato sauce with garlic and a light spicey aftertaste. That fits with the Mexican half of the theme for the restaurant. For an entrée, we shared the local seabass, $30, with cilantro, garlic, roasted tomato, and fennel sauce marinade. It was cooked on the skin and was delightfully moist. The red sauce offered an interesting contrast. The restaurant has a limited two-page wine list with interesting selections from Spain, Germany, France, Baja California, Napa, Mendocino, Italy, New Zealand, and Slovenia. Prices are $15-$18 for a glass. Wine bottles range from $52-$100. The list could use a domestic Chardonnay and a few more reds to go with their spicier dishes. We tried a Bordeaux blend, $15, and a Sangiovese, $17. Service was friendly and efficient. Corkage is $25. The server said the menu and wine list change frequently. We’ll bring our own wine next time.
