  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for live music
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Think it’s a beautiful quiet place for dinner in the middle of the hustle/bustle of Time Square.

What a delightful experience! The restaurant is beautiful, staff is very attentive (Lana gave us recommendations that we really enjoyed) and the delicious food arrived quickly. We enjoyed live piano music during our Sunday dinner. Great spot for dinner!

We just loved the whole experience. The staff was friendly, the food was fantastic, and the live piano music added that extra special touch. Can’t wait to go back again.

Honestly I was a little bit taken aback by this place. First of all the service was not super great. I had to ask our server for menus and for someone to take our drinks. Then I ordered a filet mignon that cost 52 dollars but I had fries. That’s all it had. The side was fries nothing else…. Overall it was not the best experience I have had and I don’t think I’ll return. They also brought the food first before the appetizer. Also they did not have any other salad except for the lobster salad.

Lovely environment, you can tell the team really cares about the quality of the food. Had fixed menu, the sole was delicious. My wife had the filet and it was cooked perfectly.

This place is a real gem, and an absolute value. Not every menu item dead on, but most are. The liver is a standout and not a common menu item around town these days. The escargot itself was delicious, although if you're going to soak up all the butter and garlic with bread, be sure that you're a garlic fan as it's a bit forward. The duck is supposed to be spectacular, so that will be next visit. It's a fun room with excellent service service and a warm attentive staff. I recommend it highly for casual or "any night" affordable treat.

Like being time warped to Paris! Excellent service and food! Lovely piano music and artsy decor. The “joie de vivre“ from the 1930’s brought to life in 2024! Delicious food and service and perfect martinis! Merci beaucoup

We walked 1.3 miles across Manhattan to get to Chez Josephine, just because we like it so much. Even though it was very busy, the experience continued wonderful. The sole from the prix fixe is delightful, as is the cousin noir.
