Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 5 days a week for Dinner as we navigate after Hurricane Helene.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    We loved the food. Highly recommend the baby back ribs! Pork belly was also delicious. Big bowl spicy pork (not too spicy) was good. Mulled wine was ok. The smores dessert was one of the best desserts that I have ever had!!!

    Jill was the best server! She helped us decide what to order and it was ALL delicious. A perfect, cozy atmosphere… we can’t wait to go back again soon

    One of our most pleasurable dining experiences in a while. The small plate (similar to Tapas) selection was fantastic. My wife and I selected 5 items and a dessert which were all easily sharable. The service was fantastic. Our server took the time to explain the various items on the menu and answered our questions. The bartender came to our table to explain a drink variation my wife was interested in and created a signature drink on the spot. We felt very satisfied by the time we were done and was pleasantly surprised when we received the bill and saw how reasonable it was. We attended a comedy show at the Orange Peel which was so convenient to Ukiah. We don't live in Asheville, but we will surely return here the next time we are in town.

    For a restaurant just reopening in a storm impacted area of downtown Asheville, the ‘limited’ menu was delicious. And the service was impeccable. You get a real feeling that the staff is happy to be back in business. Traffic is still weird. And parking has always been a roll of the dice. But Ukiah is highly recommended.

    Outstanding service, welcoming, food is so special and delicious. We had a huge serving of tempura mushrooms, gyoza is so unique, and then tonkatsu traditional and flavorful.
