Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 5 days a week for Dinner as we navigate after Hurricane Helene.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    This 2025, we want to kick start the year with as much luck and as our community can hold, so we are hosting our Annual Lucky Brunch, combining Japanese influence with our southern roots. We will feature a special a la carte menu throughout the day including brunch favorites, custom dishes and our signature tasting menu. Highlights from this year’s menu include: Banana Bourbon French Toast with salted sesame caramel, Slow Smoked Prime Ribs + sunny side eggs, Sake braised Black Eyed Peas and Collard Greens with BBQ pulled pork, bacon vinaigrette + crispy shallots. Our beverage team will feature some select cocktails priced at $8.28 for the day. We look forward to having you!

    The food was delicious and the service was great! Since not everyone at our table wanted to do the tasting menu, we created our own with a few dishes on the menu and it was fabulous.

    If you love Asian or Asian fusion cuisine this place is for you! The crispy pork with Thai sauce was melt in the mouth and the cocktails/sake were delicious. Our top dish was definitely the ugani! 10/10.

    Our server was so helpful and polite. The food was outstanding. It was a great way to celebrate our last night in Ashville. If we are ever in the area again, we will be going to this restaurant again.

    While visiting Asheville, we loved our dinner at Ukiah! We decided to indulge in the tasting menu to try many options, and with each course we were delighted. Some of our favorites were the Japanese sweet potatoes, trout skewers, and crispy rice with salmon. Christopher provided wonderful service and always had an answer to our many questions. Highly recommend this place!

    Food was amazing but overall a little loud. The booths are comfortable but metal chairs are used for the stand alone tables. Would love to go back.

    We have dined at Ukiah many times and they never disappoint. The Unagi is the best I’ve ever had and their cocktail choices are all delightful. Their desserts are intriguing combinations of sweet and umami. I would highly recommend them for any and all of your dining experiences.
