An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

    Stepping into Bix is like stepping into a jazz club in New Orleans 50 years ago. The room has an upper balcony around the sides, and the whole place is beautifully decorated, with a huge mural above the classic old-style bar. Service was prompt, friendly, and humorous. They made me a fine Vesper. There was a warm roll with butter at our plates, and then an amuse bouche came shortly after. My half-dozen oysters were sweet and fresh. The lobster pasta had plenty of large chunks of lobster and was delicious. The poached pear dessert came with a big dollop of whipped cream on the side. There was a jazz piano trio playing classics, and even though we were only about 20 feet away, we could talk above the music (but it was good enough to just sit back and listen to). All in all, this was a great experience. It's not cheap, but not insane either. I will definitely be back.

    It’s a good place with good food, but not to be considered as “fine dining”. So, that is a key factor to rate the place because you are paying a high price for an experience that is far from five stars.

    Beautiful setting. Management needs help with cordiality. No words to express. My lobster pasta dinner had 1/4 inca pie e of lobster. I did mention to our kind waitress who called manager. I mentioned there was no lobster. He actually could not point out to one piece other than argue that all dishes came with certain amount. Something absolutely not right with service. Did order different dish. Husband Veal Pot Pie was small but satisfying. Ambience, music and our service (asides from manager) was special. As a long time local, would not return.

    Love Bix. It is always a unique ambiance with a great bar atmosphere. The service was excellent and the food we ordered was delicious. Wish they had a few more conventional menu items.

    Classic SF experience. A beautiful, classy environment that is warm and inviting without feeling stuffy. Some dishes were better than others but all were excellent. The highlight was the cornbread which is truly indulgent. They seem to be a bit understaffed but the service did not suffer. Our server was covering a lot of ground so she wasn’t able to give us the attention that the price tag warrants but her recommendations were spot on and she handled the rush with grace. There’s a reason this place has been around for so long

    Charming "old school" Jazz Bistro-Supper Club vibe. Mellow Jazz, jazz themed bar mural and decor. The food is excellent, perhaps a bit rich for me (lots of butter and creme). Delicious! The bar is very classic-classy, well staffed, and great craft cocktails. All staff were engaging, pleasant, upbeat, and professional. Coat check is a nice 'grace note.'

    Always a delight to dine at Bix Asked for notice for an earlier reservation that was accommodated!! Food and cocktails always delicious I do wish that a check is not delivered without asking if we are finished as we often have coffee and then port. Gracious staff all around and coats are checked (often a lost service these days)
