Located at the "Gateway to Southtown," the Historic and Majestic Firehouse #7 is home to Battalion. After a nearly two year renovation, "The Rock" has been restored as the crown jewel of Southtown. Overlooking the spectacular downtown cityscape and the famous Tower of Americas, Battalion's contemporary design merges perfectly alongside the historic building's strong, yet weathered 1920's craftsmanship. Chef Davis has created an extensive menu of fresh pastas, char-grilled meats, stunning vegetable dishes and Italian classics. Complimenting the menu is a comprehensive wine list and a refreshingly original cocktail program.

We were looking for Italian food - didn’t know anything about it - but in an old firehouse was intriguing. This very well could have been the best Italian food have ever had in the US - authentic, made in house, and oh so good. Staff was very knowledgeable about the food and making recommendations / conformations. What may have set the staff apart was not upselling us on a bottle of wine when I asked about 2 different Pinot Noir options (at different price points). While it is a bit pricey - in the end it is a must stop when in San Antonio.

Very friendly and accommodating staff that walked us through the menu and gave options how to try dishes on the menu in a shared concept. Wonderful advice. GET THE MEATBALLS!

The Battalion was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious. It is a little noisy and hard to hear but worth it.

I've taken business associates and family to Battalion many times, but lately my experiences have been less than stellar. In January, I took my former boss and three colleagues to dinner, and the service was SO SLOW. We had to beg to have water glasses refilled. And the restaurant was not that busy. Last night we took our neighbors there for an early dinner before a concert, and again - not great. It took forever for someone to take our drink order. And then one of our guests asked for a substitution of vegetables for roasted potatoes. The potatoes came with the steak, but not with his choice - the trout. The server warned us that his chefs were picky about these sorts of requests, but he said he would ask. And what do you know? The chefs said they were short on potatoes and so could not accommodate us. REALLY?? SHORT OF POTATOES??? Way to alienate a first-time diner who clearly will not be back! I feel like I've given Battalion several chances to improve, and they continue to let me down. :(

Hostess greeted us & acknowledged that it was my birthday. We were sat promptly & greeted by Brittney afterwards as she served us water. We started with our drink order of wine & an Italian soda. We also ordered the beets & bread as an appetizer. Coming from Austin, this was my first time here, as I had mentioned to Brittney. My partner told me what she has been here in the past a couple of times, but she did not remember what she ordered. I took it upon myself to go on Google & look for pictures from what others have posted. Once our waitress came back with our drink orders, we asked her what her thoughts were on what it might be. We went with Trenne Bombay & the Ravioli alle Noci. Our bread with garlic roasted olive oil & charred beets arrived shortly after & both were delicious. About 15 minutes later, our pastas came out, too. I have had something similar to the ravioli before, but this was off by leaps & bounds. The ravioli was chewy & hard to cut through & was drenched in brown butter & oil. With the one bite that I took, my lips felt greasy and my stomach immediately said that was entirely way too much oil. The Trenne was also overly al dente. She wanted to make sure that it wasn’t a fluke so she asked me to try it, as she knows I am Italian & was raised on homemade pasta that Nonna & my zietta would make. We politely called over Brittney & showed her that the Trenne was hard & sticking together. She gladly replaced mine with Cacio e Pepe & had the Trenne redone. Our food arrived 5 minutes later & the pasta was same consistency. Brittney did not come back to check to see if all was ok, nor did we ever get a refill on our wine or soda (we had two refills of water once when she brought the appetizers & again when she brought the check). It would have been nice to enjoy a dessert or coffee if we had been offered, too. I mean after all, it was my birthday. We paid our bill & each left an almost 30% tip on a service & food that was mediocre, at best.

Great place. Food is really good. Ate there twice, one year apart and very consistent. Highly recommend.
