   Barbarella has great food, great drinks and a great happy hour…BUT - table selection is an issue. I arrived early - 30 mins - and got told to come back at reso time (3:45). Then, my wife and I got stuck at a 2 top in the back corner by the kitchen - and even when we asked to be reseated near the (much brighter and more interesting) front - got told they couldn’t. The tables we warned stayed open for an hour or more - and were still open when we left. I’m former industry, and my kids are all in the industry - so I get it’s not easy - but this just seemed like a failing of effort more than anything else . We ended up having just one drink each and the crispy artichokes (excellent) - and leaving. Spent $150+ in 2 other places that would I have been more happy spending there …if we could have had the seats we wanted.

   Service and ambience are excellent. Food…lots of room for improvement. Calamari, 3/10 greasy and flavourless. More greasy fennel than calamari. Burrata, 3/10 bad flavours. Way, way better at Bridgette Bar. This is a big “nope”. olives, 1.4/10 - cold, not really marinated properly and essentially just packed with hot chillies and no flavour. Again, way way better at Bridgette Bar. Ravioli, 7.5/10 really great. Light and very rich. Needs to be shared. black tiger prawns 🦐 2.5/10 on a bed of flavourless greasy chick peas. Dusted with searing hot spices devoid of actual flavour. Hot spice way overpowered any other flavour. Shrimp way overcooked. Love the attempt at innovation, but execution was not a hit. Tepid tap water 1/10. This is a European thing that might work ok there - but goes over poorly here. Yes it’s free - but the culture here is “ice water”. Not good to trying to emulate the worst parts of “European ambience”. A small but crucial detail. Green apple homemade soda 2/10. “Ay Karumba!” This was the flavour of “overpowering sour” and literally no other flavour. An Old fashioned, well made, would go well on the menu. They would sell well and bring a high ROI. Coke 9/10 Lots of ice and attentive refills. Service 10/10. Server was genuinely interested in our opinions on the food. Very helpful with choices and quite frank with her opinions. Was very happy to tip her well. Because of the excellent server, we will be back to try other things on the menu. We love the ambience for business meetings that we occasionally need to bring clients to downtown, so we will be sampling more of the menu in order to guide clients when they ask. Nice to see them try some innovations on the food. This inevitably will lead to “flops”, but I personally appreciate the effort and look forward to experiencing some eventual “hits” at this restaurant, because the staff and ambience are really great.

   The food was excellent and the staff very pleasant. We sat and chatted for a bit after paying the bill, but we didn’t feel rushed to leave. The only possible negative was that it was quite noisy, however in our group of three we could still hear each other talking, and we were far enough away from other tables that we couldn’t hear other conversations. I would highly recommend.

    Favourite restaurant in downtown Calgary! When I want to go somewhere nice Barbarella is my first choice. Went for my friends birthday and it was such a pleasant time, definitely recommend.
