Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Mexican corn and Catalan natural wine are the bedrock of this Outremont favorite that's been named one of Canada's 100 Best Restaurants. Chef Juan Lopez Luna combines authentic techniques and flavours with local Quebec ingredients, grinding his own masa for the tasting menu that might include Oaxacan tetelas with shishito peppers and bacon. Sommelier Lindsay Brennan will help you pair that with a top-notch selection of wines from the Barcelona region. Request a seat at the counter by the kitchen so you can catch Lopez Luna in action.

Philosophy

Alma's tasting menu is a journey from the ocean to the mountains, highlighting heirloom corn from Mexico which is nixtamalised and ground in-house revealing fresh masa each morning. Chef Juan Lopez Luna shares the flavours of his childhood in Central Mexico, integrating authentic Mexican techniques, heirloom Mexican corn and local Quebecois and East Coast ingredients.

  • Description
(Canada's Top 100)Located off the beaten path in the heart of Outremont, Alma is an intimate 24-seat restaurant showcasing modern Mexican cuisine with authentic techniques and flavours combined with local Quebec ingredients. It is operated by the couple, Chef Juan Lopez Luna et sommelier and wine importer Lindsay Brennan. Alma offers a tasting menu experience (5 or 9 courses) inspired by the concept of "mar y montana", largely influenced by Chef Juan's childhood memories of central Mexico as well as the couple's time spent on the coastal region of Oaxaca. Lopez is one of the few chefs in Canada working with heritage corn from Mexico, making fresh masa in-house each morning and tortillas by hand with his grandmother's traditional tortilla press. The wine list specializes in sunshine-filled Catalan wines from a unique group of winemaker-friends from the Barcelona region. Alma is the Canadian destination for Catalan wines, with a deep cellar of back vintages and rare cuvées.

Très belle expérience. Les repas du 5 services se sont déroulés à merveille, le rythme était bon et la présentation de chaque plat était très bien expliquée. L’accord avec les vins était aussi parfait.

We ordered the carte blanche 9 course pairing menu without the wine pairings. Instead chose two incredible wines recommended by Lindsay from her private importation, which paired perfectly with all 9 courses. Food is authentic, incredibly creative, staff expertly explained all product sourcing, ingredients, both local and imported from Mexico. One of dishes had a mole sauce from Chef Juan Lopez' aunt which takes 2 days and over 30 ingredients to make. That kind of authentic details, Very highly recommened.

Unfortunately, food lacked flavors. Portions were way too small. It might be a high end Mexican restaurant but for the price, it missed the wow effect. Won’t recommend or go back!

I really can’t imagine a more exceptional dining experience. Room, service, music, and vibe all work in concert to provide a welcoming, comfortable experience. The food and service were exceptional. Plenty of information without seeming burdensome. Honestly one of the finest meals of my life. Opted for the 5 vs. 7 course tasting menu and could not regret more. Will absolutely return to this restaurant. For clarity sake, I reside in Alabama, US. Will return to Montreal, I in part, because I must dine here again. Food which spoke to me like a childhood memory. Made me dance like music. Amazing.
