About this restaurant

  • Great for creative cocktails
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
Abacá is an airy, atelier-style restaurant with a cool outdoor terrace, whipping up Filipino-Californian cuisine with flair in Fisherman's Wharf. It's the bricks-and-mortar spin off of chef Francis Ang's pop-up Pinoy Heritage. The lively menu is split up into barbecue sticks, noodles and rice, and small to big plates, but its far more nuanced than just that. Flavourful dishes pull from family recipes and are glazed with modern and heritage technique to result in a vibrancy that's hard to come by. It's grounded by local produce. Smoked Bay scallops lead in the seafood pancit, heirloom tomatoes top homemade tinapay bread, chicken skin is glazed in an adobe before hitting the grill and guinea fowl comes slathered with peanut sauce. A truncated list of creative Southeast Asian libations bring it full circle – if you're on the terrace, cool off with the Baguio breeze slushy – a dreamy mix of pandan-infused vodka, coconut and strawberry.

Everything was excellent! I was pleasantly surprised by the food: from the presentation, experience and tasting! Such a beautiful homage to Filipino Cuisine! Definitely elevated with interesting twists on classics! The service all around was excellent: knowledgeable, attentive and friendly! This place warrants another visit!

My family and I celebrated Mother’s Day at Abaca and was thoroughly impressed. The service and food were outstanding. It’s difficult to find good Filipino food in the Bay Area, and so this definitely takes the cake. We will be back!

Unfortunately, Abaca did not live up to expectations and the high price tag. We went with the Chef's tasting menu. While the food and flavors were good, it wasn't spectacular by any means. The mandatory 20% gratuity and 5% added healthcare charge also didn't line up with the service which was subpar. The overall experience (food, service, ambiance) did not line up with the price tag or the expectations. Unfortunately, this was a miss.

Had a 12:00 reservation and we were taken back at 12:48. Food was ok but it was Mothers Day Buffett and when we went thru the buffet it was pretty picked thru with most items being almost gone. They did replenish so we eventually had full plates. Our first and only round of drinks came right when we finished our desserts and water never got replenished.

The food was really good and tasty, but the time allotted for diners for a buffet was not worth the cost. I’ve overheard diners in the restroom said the same thing.

Our second time here for dinner. We opted to do the “Paubaya” Chef Tasing Dinner since they were able to accommodate our vegetarian and pescatarian preferences. Well worth the price for 4 courses (3 savory, 1 sweet, along with amuse-bouche and some extras thrown in)! Highlights included vegetable lumpia, oyster mushroom BBQ stick and my main, the Ledsema Farms Savory Cabbage. Service was kind and attentive.

Absolutely fabulous tasting menu, filed with interesting and beautifully presented dishes. We were blown away by the quality of the food and the delightful waitstaff. The cocktails and wine list were also superb. Five star dining, for sure!

I was really excited to have an upscale Filipino dining experience but unfortunately my visit was less than stellar. Firstly, the restaurant was over crowded. It seemed really tight and even the staff struggled to get around. Secondly, the actual service seemed disjointed. The hostess seemed like she needed back up, and the server for my table never seemed to check on me (or the table next to me.) I waited 20 minutes for my drink, and around 45 for my meal. For an approximately $80 prix fixe meal, I expect a certain level of service and that wasn’t hit. Lastly, the food really not as good as I hoped. They offered a pandesal that was too small for the “spreads” they offered (one of which came late). The lumpia filling dislodged from its wrapper and the wagyu steak I ordered did not work well with its sides. In the end, I opted to leave earlier than I intended. I feel like my table neighbors felt the same because I could hear their entire conversation at normal speaking volume. I am willing to accept it was an off day, but man that was memorably bad.
