Since 1746, the building that houses this tavern has played a part in the establishment of our nation; first as a respite for stagecoach travelers expanding westward and later as a covert rendezvous point for George Washington, Marquis de Lafayette, and other leaders of the American revolution. It is believed that during the infamous winter of 1777–1778 at Valley Forge, a major figure in the Continental Army, master military mind Friedrich Von Steuben, designated the tavern as a secret black powder munitions stash for Continental Army couriers. I've dined at The Cage many times. Today was not the best. My salad was tasty and pleasant to look at but unfortunately it was swimming in salad dressing. It took away from the salad. This has never happened before. Waitress was not to be found when we left.

Greeters were personable and attentive. Stopped at the bar to wait for the rest of my party and bartenders were busy but handled it well and were polite and fast. Table was set nicely and our server came soon to offer menus and options. Service throughout was prompt but unobtrusive. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the history. Food was very good and portions were generous. I plan to go back!
