Here, on the Central Coast of California, BBQ has always meant grilling over an open fire of red oak, a style of cooking that is native to our area and goes back to the days of the Spanish Rancheros. By combining the old and the new, we have created an exciting cuisine with outstanding steaks, ribs and chicken, along with fresh fish and seafood and vegetarian options. We also create our own (world class) wines for sale in the restaurant and to the public. Hartley Ostini Hitching Post Wines have garnered an excellent reputation, particularly for our Pinot Noirs. Try them while dining, or at our wine tasting room next door, or purchase on our winery website (www.hpwines.com).

Taverns have flourished along Santa Ynez’s Sagunto Street since 1906. Sixty years ago, four busy bars entertained the locals and visitors alike. These establishments were named Last Chance, the Bum Steer, Parker’s and the Maverick Saloon. While three of the four original taverns have since disappeared into history, the legendary Maverick Saloon is still going strong and continues to be a staple in the Santa Ynez valley. In 1963, Jerry and Diane Thompson bought nine bare lots from publisher tycoon Hastings Harcourt. Plans were drawn up for a museum, restaurant, two-story hotel and the Maverick Saloon, which is named after a TV series starring James Garner. A few years later (approx. 1968) the barn was built next to the saloon. To achieve an antique look, the Thompsons used materials salvaged from demolished Victorian houses. The barn’s history began as the “Lulubelle’s Restaurant” and a tool rental facility. The barn and dancehall became a permanent part of the Maverick Salo

My girlfriend is allergic to garlic, and the chef and staff accommodated her dietary restrictions; the chef even prepared a special mussel dish for us. It was a memorable experience, indeed.

I came here as a fan on the movie Sideways. My meal was excellent and the service was even better. I had filet mignon and it was cooked perfectly. Lentil soup was superb! My server was Autumn and she was personable, professional, polite, and provided excellent service. The wine was excellent. I would highly recommend the Hitching Post II.

From start to finish; AMAZING. Took my daughters and mom for Valentines. The hostess arranged for us to get the best table in the house. The food was excellent, not the normal, but an original interpretation of what food should taste like. Our waitress was very kind and attentive. Dessert was also very thought out. The house manager was also very involved in our experience. My family and I felt very much appreciated and most of all cared after. One of our best if not the best Valentines we have lived.

Bell's is, without a doubt, one of my favorite restaurants in the entire state of California. Along with its sister restaurant, Bar Le Cote in Los Olivos, it offers cuisine influenced by both the local products of the Central Coast (locally-farmed produce, Santa Barbara sea urchin, and the like), and both modern and classic European influences. I make it a point to visit at least one, if not both, of these two restaurants, whenever I am in the area, and I would consider them to be worth a trip or at at least a detour, when driving up and down the California coast. The food is fresh, innovative, and extremely flavorful, and the service is always top notch. The a la carte lunch menu at Bell's is extremely fun. I think it would be impossible to come here and not enjoy yourself.
