Maccaroni Trattoria Italiana in the Melbourne CBD is serving rustic and authentic Italian food like its meant to be – flavoursome, simple and made with a healthy dose of Italian passion. The chefs behind this Manchester Lane restaurant are dedicated to following traditional recipes (just like Nonna used), using their knowledge from homeland Italy and adding just a touch of gourmet modernity. Freshly made pasta is undoubtedly the star of the show at Maccaroni Trattoria Italiana, ranging from gnocchi and tagliatelle to fettuccine and pappardelle. Yet the menu also offers rustic pizzas, traditional mains and homemade desserts that will satisfy any guest – especially when enjoyed alongside the Italian and Australian wines available. This was our first time at Serai having heard really good things about this restaurant. As someone who doesn’t eat pork, I was initially a little apprehensive about how this could be managed given pork’s ubiquity in Filipino cuisine - fear not! Wonderful seafood and veg dishes and interesting pork numbers for my two pork-eating friends. Great service too, with an extensive wine list for all tastes and most budgets. I’ll be back :)

The food was SO delicious and meats expertly made. We were just a party of three and ordered $49 pp menu which consisted of two small dishes and two main large dishes (plus a bowl of Jasmine rice). We ordered for smalls the Sate Ayam chicken skewers and Sate Maranggi Beef skewers. The Ayam skewers were succulent and not dry, and lay on top of a perfect and highly addictive peanut satay sauce. The Maranggi skewers were soft not too rare but richly flavourful from the soy marinade. The mains we chose Rendang Wagyu which looked amazing in presentation (very generous serving too) it looked dense and black cooked in a dark chilli curry. It wasn’t spicy however this dish combined with Jasmine rice is insanely satisfying and filling. Still on the meat tip we ended up with the lighter Ayam Tangkap Aceh an aromatic lightly fried chicken with chilli, curry leaves and crispy pandan. The flavours infused with the rich olive oil tasted great with rice and our Rendang beef. We also had Gado Gado green been + tofu peanut dressing salad. I don’t drink alcohol but the cocktails are also yummy I got to taste my friend’s Cendol - clarified Pandan vodka, palm sugar + salty coconut mmmm the strength of the vodka was nicely offset with sweetness of sugar and that empowering distinct coconut taste. We were so full we didn’t end ordering desert. Next time. We had such a good time and our waiters and waitress were so friendly and obliging with all our requests. Will def be back again 5 Stars
