Paffuto is a BYOB Italian cafe from chefs and co-owners Daniel Griffiths, Jake Loeffler, and Sam Kalkut. Located at 1009 S. 8th Street in Philadelphia’s Bella Vista neighborhood, Paffuto serves breakfast and lunch specialties on mornings and afternoons from Wednesday through Sunday, featuring panzerotti, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, sides, and house-made pastries. Housed in a 1,400-square-foot, 23-seat restaurant, Paffuto (meaning plump in Italian) now serves dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with one seating at 7:00. Entering the Saloon, a family owned restaurant since it opened in 1967 is a bit like stepping into Philadelphia's past. Dark oak paneling, shiny brass and authentic local antiques create a warm congenial and casual atmosphere. The choice of two comfortable dining rooms each with its own vintage bars make dining and conversation a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Both bars feature a delicious and moderately priced food menu. The menu is Italian with seafood specials such as grilled octopus and dover sole. Saloon steaks and veal chops are legendary. Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

    We were seated promptly upon arrival on the 2nd floor as requested. Our server helped to make this a very enjoyable evening. She was very knowledgeable about a menu and was able to make a very good recommendation for a wine selection. She also provided a complementary glass of champagne as it was our anniversary.

    We sat outside for our anniversary dinner and the staff was so friendly and helpful the entire time. Our food came out in a decent time and was very good. The view from Parc’s outside dining is a beautiful view to have with your meal and I highly recommend it!

    This was a thoroughly enjoyable dinner. The food was solid but the service was impeccable. After finding out it was my birthday, one of the three birthdays in the restaurant, they went above and beyond with a delicious piece of cake and an entertaining singing performance. It made for a really fun evening.
