About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
Il Porcellino, located in the heart of River North in downtown Chicago, is a neighborhood restaurant offering classic Italian-American comfort food in a casual setting. Our seasonal menu focuses on housemate pastas, vegetable antipasti and daily specials, all crafted with ingredients sourced from quality artisans, purveyors, and local farmers. The fun and approachable wine program encourages sharing with selections primarily from Italy.

As a way to offset rising costs associated with the restaurant (food, beverage, labor, benefits, supplies), we have added a 3% surcharge to all checks. We do this in lieu of increased menu prices. You may request to have this taken off your check, should you choose.

I truly did not think my experience could be any worse this time around as it was a year ago but unfortunately I was wrong. We walked in at 4pm to a not so busy restaurant considering it was a holiday. The host sat us and explained the menu and the Mother’s Day specials. Maybe 15 mins later our server finally came over, flat, monotoned, no smile, no introduction. Asked if we’d been in before, welcomed us back, filled our waters re-explained exactly what the host said and told us he’d be back. I told him we were actually ready to throw in a few appetizers and he looked annoyed. Apps came out, 2 of which were hot dishes that were served at room temperature. The table next to us sent their dishes black for the same reason. We finished our apps after about 20ish mins and sat for about another 10-15 mins before I flagged him down again to ask if we could place our entree order to which, again, he looked annoyed. My thought is— if you’re annoyed at me flagging you down imagine how annoying it is for me to HAVE TO flag you down just to have a normal paced dining experience. The support staff was so much more attentive and kind. Our entrees came out and the plates were all hot but the food in them were all just warm. They looked like they’d been sitting under a heat lamp. Nothing seemed fresh. I also sat through most of my entree with no drink because he never came back to check on us after our entrees hit the table. In what world? All just completely underwhelming and lazy service which is so unfortunate. I’m tired. I’m tired of tipping 25% to people who don’t show an ounce of hospitality and make you feel like you’re bothering them. I’ve noticed this trend a lot with Lettuce restaurants within the last couple years and it’s so incredibly disappointing. And to complain at every turn of the experience also feels like something I do want to do. Avoid this place. There are so many other fantastic Italian restaurants in the city.

Great experience! Went for a casual “double date” with some friends and had a great time! The restaurant was filled with great music and incredible lighting; truly a great place to visit for a dinner at night. Will come again!

Excellent food and service. Recommend the garlic bread and fried calamari for appetizers; enjoyed the eggplant parmesan, kale salad, gnocchi, spicy scallops for the main meals and the chocolate cake for dessert.

Great ambience and the drinks were great. We ordered 4 types of pasta dishes, the pasta was rolled too thick, gnocchi was too heavy(way too much flour), the tomato sauce lacked flavour.

Can’t say enough good things about Il Porcellino! Everything was wonderful - atmosphere, service and especially the food! We ordered the garlic bread and meatballs appetizer at the suggestion of our server, and both were excellent. We also shared a small Caesar salad, which was big enough for 2 unless you’re really hungry or not ordering other food (FYI, I saw another table get the large salad, which is definitely big enough for 4). Our server told us that everything is big enough to split including many of the entrees. After eating all these appetizers, we decided to share the lasagna. This was a really nice option as we’re just visiting Chicago for the weekend and had no place to keep leftovers or time to eat them. The lasagna was AMAZING. Highly recommend this restaurant! We will definitely be back next time we visit Chicago!

Dinner was fabulous! Loved the Chicken Vesuvio followed by the triple chocolate cake for dessert. The ambience was perfect & not very loud.

This place was awesome. I took my mom here for her birthday and the entire staff was extremely welcoming and friendly. They really helped make the experience special. The food was absolutely divine. I would return 1 million times over just to eat the baked burrata lasagna again. Everything was superb.
