About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Great for fine wines
  • Good for special occasions
The Gabriel Archer Tavern was built in 1987 on footprints of an old farm shed. Today, its mission is to provide a memorable farm-to-table dining experience that's both delicious and nourishing.

In addition to a half-acre produce garden and greenhouse on site where lettuces and herbs will be grown, our chef works hard to find local farmers as partners in producing a menu oriented towards fresh and seasonal specialties.

Our wide variety of fresh selections from our unique menu will guarantee that everyone in your party leaves with a smile.

As a local, I have a 40+ year relationship with the Williamsburg Winery. Loved Provencal when it was open and have enjoyed a few of the white wines over the years (Viognier, Acte 12 and Gov Chardonnays). This was my first visit to Gabriel Archer in over 10 years (was never a fan) and I returned on the encouragement of friends. The identity crisis remains. While they are trying to create a tavern environment the coziness is not achieved, but a dated 70's dingy environment long overdue for a facelift shines through. This would be ok if one was not trying to put forward a fine dining menu (albeit very limited and lackluster) with starters in the high teens and main dishes near $40. The non-absorbent napkin (is that even paper?) doesn't help either. My group struggled with the menu trying to put together a starter then entree that seemed compatible. I was intrigued by the description of the butternut squash soup but it wasn't available. I landed on the beet salad with hummus as my starter followed by the Faroe Island Salmon. The beet salad indeed was presented beautifully, the hummus was very tasty, but the "salad" and beets were not dressed and came across bland. But...for a Tavern...there wasn't much there on the plate....and although they provided a bowl of pita crisps for the hummus it was over in 2 bites with chips galore but no hummus. A $17 salad. I ordered the salmon cooked medium which was served alongside some turnip pieces. The salmon was quite small and arrived with a hard-cooked meat crust on the outside but was cool sashimi on the inside. Thank goodness I love salmon sashimi, but was the salmon frozen to achieve this crust/sashimi outcome? All was over in 3 or 4 bites and the taste was - ok. My dining partners had the hangar steak and spinach salad to less than stellar fanfare. The hangar steak was another 5-6 bite entree. Our server was a nice but was busy with a large, very noisy party next to us. Non ci sarà una prossima volta

Service was excellent it the food was sub par. Sandwiches & dessert were dry. We’ve had better here, so maybe it was an off day for the restaurant.

We enjoyed patio dining for lunch this afternoon. The setting was lovely. Outdoor dining provides a quieter environment. A nice concise lunch menu provided a variety of entrées. I enjoyed the shrimp street tacos with two glasses of wine from Williamsburg Winery. Not someplace that is easy on the wallet for lunch on a regular basis. But for a treat or special occasion it’s a win!
