The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to markets in Birmingham and London.Today, Mike Pope and his team provide a warm welcome to both locals and the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year. For the dog lovers amongst you, well behaved dogs are allowed in, and with the beautiful walks around Ludlow and its Whitcliffe Common, muddy boots are always a feature of the pub!

    We dined here at lunchtime on Christmas Eve and were not disappointed. The staff were attentive and friendly, the food was amazing, especially my fish and chips! The pub had a lovely atmosphere too and we all agreed that it was a good choice for lunch.

    A 2nd time having dinner at The Riverside at Aymestrey, this time taking my Mother and father for a Christmas dinner. From start to finish, this place is exceptional. We received a friendly welcome, all the staff are attentive and the whole ambience is warm and inviting. We sat in the lower dining room and the food was absolutely excellent and fantastic value. The restaurant was accomodating to our requests prior to arrival and we had a wonderful time. We enjoyed sitting by the fireplace to have coffee afterwards. I think this is a new family favourite!! Thank you to all the staff who made our Christmas dinner so special.
