While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

Napa Valley Bistro was opened in 2013 by chefs Bernardo Ayala and Ernesto Martinez, (also co-owner of Market in St. Helena). Acre never disappoints. This was no exception. There was a delay in the kitchen and food was taking longer than usual to come out. We barely noticed because we were with old friends catching up. But the manager came out and apologized and brought us a free appetizer and comped another round of drinks, so we were all good!

We had Christmas dinner here, and it did not disappoint! Absolutely delicious. Two of us had the squid ink linguini with mixed shellfish and my husband had the chicken parm. Portions were quite small on the linguini dish and I kind of wish our meals could have included a salad or something, but that’s ok. Service was extremely quick and super-friendly. I would love to go back if we’re in the area again!

I brought my family into SF for a few days of shopping and fun to break up the holidays. We live in Marin and are picky about driving into the city for dinner. Being a native born San Franciscan and resident in SF / Marin my whole life, La Mar proved a great pick. My wife, my two grown daughters and I will definitely return. La Mar - great spot and thanks for a wonderful dinner!
