Opening their first location in the spring of 1984, Helen Babalos & Thomas Makris brought us Anatoli Souvlaki. They had a dream of combining the food of Greece with great service to add some Mediterranean style to the North Vancouver restaurant selection. They opened in the sleepy neighbourhood of lower Lonsdale and lived above the restaurant to ensure the quality and service. They were able to create a North Vancouver staple, a successful thriving restaurant based on faithful patrons and a reputation that has been passed through generations.In 2011, the family-run restaurant was taken over by their sons Alexi and Iani. Thomas Makris, from the Island of Skopelos, fell in love when he met Helen Babalos. They met at Orestes Greek restaurant in 1974, while on a Greek dancing tour of North America. This is one of the best Greek restaurants in town. A bit pricy, but it has comfortable booth seating and authentic food at a much higher level than the usual overdone kebabs & rice platters. The grilled octopus was tender; lamb shoulder had a delicious sauce. We were expecting greens on the side, but we now know that you have to order them separately. They were unfortunately out of retsina (wahh!), so we tried two other wines, which were drinkable but weren't particularly great. The music started out (and occasionally returned to) a very un-Greek soft rock more befitting to a Robson Street chain store, but as the evening wore on, it became more sophisticated soundtrack, and mercifully at a low enough volume to allow easy table conversation. All in all, not perfect but well above average and worth your night out.

Elegant but casual, Selene impressed and delighted. Amazing service and food, and the most elevated Greek salad I’ve ever had. I would also drink the mussel broth on its own, it’s that good. Selene deserves all the success, thank you for a lovely evening!
