Went for my wife’s birthday - first time. Appetizers tasted good. Tuna tartare portion far smaller than anywhere else. Venison good. Tuna in the Tuna Nicoise tasted “fishy” and cold (we ordered rare but it tasted like it just came out of the refrigerator after too many days. Pricepoint appropriate. I think there are better French restaurants to go to.

An old friend and I have lunch every Wednesday at French Roast. We are always delighted. The food is always excellent - tasty, well prepared and attractively presented. The staff is always ready with a cheerful greeting and is helpful kind and professional. The high quality of the food is always excellent and often surprising - for example. the chef prepares Ratatouille which is equal to or exceeds any Ratatouille (which has always been a favorite of mine) that I have ever had at restaurants in France. I cannot say enough good things about the hostess Marieleno and Darwin who is usually our server. Marieleno greets us cheerfully and is quick to offer assistance to my friend who is 91 years old and uses a walker. She is quick to make certain to hold both doors for him and to help with folding and placing his walker in a very convenient place. And as we prepare to leave, she assists him again in every possible way. All of this while she continues to greet and assist arriving and departing guests. Darwin is always cheerful, friendly and helpful. We look forward to seeing Darwin every week. Although he is very busy and under pressure during the very busy lunchtime, he remains cheerful, helpful and takes whatever time is necessary to discuss the menu and specials with us and make suggestions. Darwin is a key to our all around positive experience at French Roast. We love French Roast - the food the staff, especially Marieleno and Darwin and even though we had lunch only several hours ago today, we are looking forward to next Wednesday.

Shrimp cocktail was amazing, with some of the sweetest prawns I had this season. The fries were good, as reviewed by others and you should try the creamed kale too. We enjoyed the appetisers so much that we ended up not ordering any mains. Service was impeccable as well. I would highly recommend Monterey as a must try when in New York!
